I am very interested in Fordham and I live about 20 minutes away from the college. However, I would like to dorm. Would it make sense for me to apply for housing?

Personal decision. If housing was offered, and you live that close, you are lucky. Living in dorms is another realm from living at home. Sometimes kids at home do better because they get more normal sleep patterns and eat better and otherwise dont have the stress from dorm drama. On the otherhand, dorm living is a part of college and growing up, becoming independent and learning to deal with other people who may be annoying at times.

Plus, the cost of living in dorms and eating cafeteria food is not cheap. For many, its a financial issue.

If I were you I’d apply for it just so you have it if you want it. That gives you extra time to decide where you would be happiest. Ghostbuster is correct that it can be a financial issue. It’ll save over 10 grand to live at home and commuters are granted more scholarship money.
If you’re asking this in terms of do you think it’s possible living so close they’d give it to you then it depends on how strong of an applicant you are. I live in somewhat commutable range and was given housing, and one of my best friends lives about 15/20 minutes outside the city and was given housing as well (she applied ED though).
If you want it try for it. It’s better to have and turn down than want and not have.
