I'm wondering... are transfers guaranteed housing, or are they placed in a lottery of some kind? At more than a few colleges, transfers seem to get the short end of the stick as far as housing goes; Boston University said straight out they can't guarantee transfers housing. Although I really like NYU, not being able to get guaranteed housing would be a real dealbreaker for me since getting an apartment of my own in NYC would be hugely expensive. Anyone know?

caligu,

I am fairly certain transfer students are guaranteed housing at NYU, if you choose it from the get go. However, I am not sure you will get your first choice dorm. I am not sure if this is because current students get to sign up (for housing choice in March) before you even know about your acceptance.

I remember one transfer student complaining about the NYU housing the student was assigned to. But I do not remember any transfer student complaining about being left out of housing entirely.

It does help to have school housing until you get familiar with NYU and the city, then you may opt to live in non-NYU housing with other students/ friends. The cost may even be cheaper or equivalent to NYU cost, depending on neighborhood and size of your group, kind of apartment, etc.
