Hey everyone!
I shall be joining UMich as a graduate student this august.

Is sharing between 3 occupants allowed here? If yes then how is it done?
Would sharing between 3 consequently decrease the rent?

I have put up these queries since I am facing some financial constrains.

I think I looked into this once when I was looking at a 2 bedroom+den, and the answer was no. Now, no one is likely to check to make sure 3 people aren’t living there, but on paper it can only be 2. I don’t remember off hand if there were 3 bedrooms but if there are then those can likely have 3 people. But the 2 bedroom apartments can only have 2.

AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Find a place off campus. Northwood IV, V are the furthest thing away from campus. Even if you’re a graduate student in Architecture or Engineering on North Campus. You will still need to take a bus ride to Pierpont.

Seriously walking from IV, V to Pierpont is akin from walking from the edge of Central Campus to North Campus.
Even if you do want the quietness of North Campus, live in Huron Towers or Courtyards. Both are still pretty bad, yet still a tier above Northwood IV, V.

If you actually want to enjoy Ann Arbor and have a decent social life, I highly recommend finding anywhere close to Central Campus.

If you’re annoyed by FratRow, then avoid Oxford and South U area.

There is blue bus running between NW and campus. I lived there for several years and love it. REMEMBER it is originally for family, so you would expect a lot of kids around. In NW5, there are some 3 bedroom units. You should contact the housing office to figure it out. One thing I want to point out is roommates must be in the same genter. Even siblings of opposite genders are not allowed to share a town house unit.

I use to work a location that ran the NW bus ran through.
This will be especially be a hassle during winter when the buses run slower and are less reliable. If you have the option to live in a place 10 minute walk away from campus take it. There is really no reason to live in V, IV

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
Since I need to consider my financial constrains also what would be best: off campus or on campus living??

If you’re looking for something cheap try Willowtree, they have a few pretty cheap apartments, I’ve heard of people getting in the $200-$250 range for rent, but I think that’s sharing a bedroom. I’ve also heard some of the apartments by South Campus can go for around the same, but still sharing a bedroom. I think $400 is probably as low as you can get if you’re looking for your own bedroom in Ann Arbor. If you’re really trying to scrimp and save every penny it might be better to live in Ypsi but you would then have to commute every day (there’s a bus - free with an MCard) but you would still likely be paying absolute minimum $300 a month to get your own bedroom, and presumably $150 a month if you shared.

Apartments in AA are getting very expensive unless you find some roommates to share the cost. Housing on campus are more flexible. Athough there is a lease for NW, you may terminate the lease anytime you finish your study or work there. When I was looking for an apartment for my family, NW was the best option in town. For single, you may have other choices.
