Paloma- in flo mo. has stigma of "SLE". actually, i don't know for sure if its part of sle or not. sorry. flo mo food is ok. on sterns level i would say. rooms are pretty spacious.

Cedro-people i knew in cedro said it was ok. that's pretty much all i know. and that its in wilbur and therefore has a lot of people around. not a bad dorm i guess.

Serra-part of the whole construction situation by stern. faces the construction with zapata. a lot of the doubles were made into singles for upperclassmen, so it's gonna have less people and be a little more anti social i think. but i could be wrong. but i think the siz of the doubles are nice. better than lagunita. although lagunita has a sink unlike any other freshmen living option. but i digress.

Larkin-all frosh in stern. stern food sucks. lots of spirit. pretty fun and awesome from what i heard from people last year that lived there.

know anything about roble?

it's right before lagunita. it's huge a pretty on the outside. four class. i believe freshman get double, although there are singles, triples, and quads for upperclassmen. you eat at lagunita and like i said, it's huge. people i knew there liked it.

Paloma is not SLE. It is in West FloMo. SLE is East.

Freshmen: Don't bank on getting a single. Some people get them in Branner, I think maybe Wilbur dorms, but you won't get a nice, big Lag single. You will only get a single in an all-frosh dorm -- otherwise, upperclassmen would choose them!

Roble: It's being remodled this summer, so it's going to be very nice. All freshmen live in 3-room quads (2 TINY bedrooms with bunks and a common room with desks.) Last year, there were 160 frosh, almost more than any dorm, though it may be less this year due to the ongoing construction. Freshmen don't live in doubles.

LOL, no frosoco people at all? whoa there...

anyway, keep the questios coming -- and welcome!

I haven't replied to this thread, but I'm a frosoco person. tell me everything. ^^
and zomg I just met another profro who was at the frosoco bbq at admit weekend...there were 2 of us oO...but he's not gonna be in frosoco. haha

does anyone know how much it costs to rent a microwave and minifridge on campus instead of bringing one? is it really necessary? (for otero)

also, when they kick us out for winter/spring break, do we have to move our stuff out of the dorms or just our bodies?

and seriously, someone tell me why the freaking hell orientation costs $425!!!! i better be getting some caviar. damn.

frosoco-furthest dorm from the main quad for freshman i believe. past lagunita. all the rooms i've been in were 2 room doubles. there may be other types though. it's kind of known as anti social since its so far away from every other dorm and it has the whole SLE type feel, in terms of having special prof talks and help and whatnot. sorry that was kind of vague and not THAT accurate. but i know people that hated it, and some that liked it. but everyone i know has admitted to it being kind of not as social. i know a girl that transferred out frosh year b/c her floor was horrible and nobody talked to each other. but the food was pretty good last year there. i liked it when i went. although the selection is considerable smaller than other dining halls. but it's what you make of it and it depends on the people you get. i remember finding out you had to APPLY to get in and after hustling senior year w/ college and scholarship apps, i was like HELL NO i'm not applying for a dorm. yeah that laziness wasn't the best way to start my frosh year, but i digress.

purplerain, a microwave isn't necessary. they'll have them in every dorm since every dorm has at least one kitchenette and they are nearby. microwave is just a waste of space. i DO think fridges are handy, if you like to keep cold stuff like drinks or food in them. kitchenettes have big fridges in them, but they are usually disgusting, full, or people steal stuff from them. so yeah, but one on campus. sometimes people will be selling theirs or giving them away for free the first couple of weeks on campus. if not, there are these companies that come and sell them to you for the year, like renting them. i'm not sure how much they cost. but you can also take the margauritte bus to target or walmart, or have your parents take you. i think they range from 50-100 bucks new.

winter break is the only break where it is MANDATORY to leave. all you do is take yourself home, and whatever clothes you'll need of course. but everything else can stay in your room. and i suggest you put your bike in your room during winter and other breaks when you're gone so it doesn't get stolen, although is relatively rare if you have a u lock.

orientation costs that much b/c you get a whole bunch of random free ish. like food and shirts and they have to pay for stuff for the events they are putting on for you. no caviar though...

It's that there are no branner kids that I find absolutely ridiculous... Ten percent of the freshman class, come on guys!

Paloma is certainly not associated with SLE at all. You'll find that Paloma and Gavilan (the all frosh dorms in West FloMo, aka WestFlo) are the complete opposite of SLE- usually huge partiers(Paloma has a rep for the highest number of alcohol related hospital visits), but they're a lot of fun. And the staff there next year is going to be absolutely fantastic.

paloma, partiers? hmmm. if you say so. i know they def drank a lot, but not more than any other dorm i know of. and just b/c they went to the hospital more doesn't mean they're bigger partiers. it means they're more inexperienced and stupid partiers. jp...but really....

there was that one guy that put on the west flomo party with the sluge. pretty impressive. but yeah, i think saying paloma are HUGE partiers is a little bit of a stretch.

thanx current student!

more random questions, if anyone can find the time...
1. does anyone know if most of the rooms in Otero have bunk beds? do most rooms have at least 1 window?

do i need to bring:

garbage can

surge protector

hangers

bathroom scale

desk/bed light? (like, for reading, etc.)

is all of Wilbur (more specifically Otero) air conditioned? should i bring a fan?

how are the bathrooms in Otero?

was there anything you realized you really could use throughout the year - like stupid stuff that improved your quality of life, like a bubble couch?

just trying to have some sort of structure before i go to IKEA and explode.

thanks for doing this! do you sophs have dorms yet?

does anyone know if most of the rooms in Otero have bunk beds? do most rooms have at least 1 window?

----most, >90% have two beds on opposite sides of the room. i believe you can loft them and make it into a bunk bed, you can in other dorms, but most people don't just b/c wilbur rooms are pretty spacious anyways. all rooms have windows on the wall opposite the door. i believe they open by turning those knob thingy's, but they are pretty decent sized windows.

do i need to bring:

garbage can............no, rooms have them

surge protector.......i believe so, i didn't need one though.

hangers..................yes, my closet didn't have any when i got there

bathroom scale.......like to check your weight? um, i've never worried about that, but i knew people who had them. that's prety much up to you. bathrooms don't have them. only at the gym and athletic locker rooms and stuff.

desk/bed light? (like, for reading, etc.) yes, at least on for your desk and maybe one for your bed if you read in bed. i just brought a desk one.

is all of Wilbur (more specifically Otero) air conditioned? should i bring a fan?

-----no they aren't air conditioned. if you get hot easily bring a fan if you want. i didn't have one, but again...i knew people who did. the "hot" (to me it was perfect) weather only last a month or two. then it's fine until the rainy winter sets in. i remember people from seattle crying because it was 75 degrees outside and they were dying. haha. 75 degrees is "fresh".

how are the bathrooms in Otero?

---they are pretty normal. i mean, you have toilets and showers and sinks. not much to say about them. i forget the exact layout though. they differ between wilbur dorms i've been in...and i haven't been in otero's bathroom. just most of the others.

was there anything you realized you really could use throughout the year - like stupid stuff that improved your quality of life, like a bubble couch?

----um...a fridge, which you should wait until you get to campus to get. your roommate might want one two and you could split the cost or something. and....hmmm....rally clothes, as in random crazy crap to wear. and that's all i can think of right now.

just trying to have some sort of structure before i go to IKEA and explode.

thanks for doing this! do you sophs have dorms yet?
---yeah we found out in may.

bring a damn stapler.

Question: do rooms in Wilbur have mirrors?

no i don't think so. maybe a small one. a full length one comes in handy

Are the dorms in lag really that small (specifically UJ)?

yeah, they're pretty small. significantly smaller than wilbur and stern and flo mo. there isn't really any "extra space", which sucks. you also share one small closet with your roommate, unlike other dorms that have separate closets. BUT you do get a sink...which is awesome, you'll see. UJ has the same size as everyother lag dorm.

but don't worry you'll get used to and live and have fun. you'll get over it in no time.

Wilbur dorms have a small mirror in the closet, but if you really need a full-length, you can just waltz down the hallway to the bathroom...

About the Wilbur dorm (I lived there last year):

I lived in a 4-class dorm, and to be honest, didn't really like it at first. It seemed like the all-frosh dorms in Wilbur were more lively and had more social events. However, I felt like all the freshmen in our dorm had a more close-knit relationship, and our dorm wasn't overrun with cliques and groups as much as Branner was. Plus, if you ever needed a car, there were at least 10 different people you could ask for a ride. You could also ask the upperclassman for advice on class choices, professor recommendations, and borrowing/buying books (the most valuable, IMHO, with the ridiculous bookstore prices). It was hard making friends with the upperclassman though, seeing as they already had their group of friends. That's the upside of the freshman dorm -- everyone is starting fresh and anew, ready to make friends.

So I guess either dorm (4-class and all-frosh) has their ups and downs, don't sweat it if you didn't get your precious all-frosh dorm. You'll probably have a calmer dorm, and if you really feel the need to party, just make friends with the all-frosh people, attend their parties, and when you're ready, retreat to your quieter dorm when you need some rest and relaxation. Trust me, you'll COVET rest and relaxation when it's Saturday night and all you want to do is sleep, not listen to some music blasting down the hall.

Staplers are highly necessary, but you can buy them at the bookstore if you don't want to bring one.

I also recommend bringing garbage bags. They'll give you a small supply when you move in, but eventually you'll need to buy more at Target or whatever.

^you don't have to buy trash bags. my dorm had a huge box with rolls upon rolls of them all year out in the hall. they were for students to take. ask your housing office for some bags if you can't find any in your dorm.
