Housing Suggestions?

Hi,

So i have some free time and i've been tryin to decide on housing and have been lookin into dorms. i have no idea where to start. I want a dorm that's quiet and I'm a non-drinker. I'd like ppl to leave me alone when I want to be. I am going to do premed, so I'm not sure whether north or south campus is a less walking distance. Also, i'd like to be by good food, and I'm a vegetarian. Haha, finding the ideal dorm is gonna be tough w/ my picky-ness, huh?. All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

The best place to start is: [Freshman housing guide 2009 » North by Northwestern](http://www.northbynorthwestern.com/2009/05/40697/freshman-housing-guide-2009/)
The walk between North and South campus isn’t as bad as some people say it is and I wouldn’t make it a big factor this in your decision. It sounds to me like you might like Shepard or Slivka.

oh wow…thank you! its a very helpful source. :)

If you want good food, you definitely want to live on south campus which has the best selection of dining halls and its right by Evanston where all the restaurants are.

I would recommend the dorm I’m living in right now (SMQ) because it seems you fit what you’re looking for (quiet, excellent location) but it has kinda a negative stigma associated with it and the facilities themselves aren’t that great. Personally, I very much enjoy living here.

I’m not sure what other quiet dorms there are on south but you could look into some of the res colleges. GL!

Slivka! It is the best.

Well if you think you may be taking more math/science classes, then dorms in North campus may be more convenient, especially in the winter. The library, which is more south, is a bit of a walk, but not bad. A lot of parties happen in north campus though, so don’t be surprised to come upon some loud, inebriated folk in the evening every so often, especially on weekends.

when do the housing forms come out anyways?

may…

can anyone describe the main differences between allison and elder? i want a more social/party dorm with air conditioning and a dining hall… i’m picky  i’ve heard that socially they have very similar atmospheres but elder has muchhh better bathrooms. opinions?

um, i’d say the main differences between allison and elder are:

 1. allison is south; elder is north – i’m not one to say which is better.
 2. allison has upperclassmen; elder is all freshmen
 3. i hear a lot of complaints about elder dining hall, but not so much from allison (although I personally don’t like either).

Isn’t there going to be a new housing situation with Elder being a resident college? Can someone clarify this?

Apparently, though not the same as the other res colleges:

[The Daily Northwestern - A new kind of housing: Residential Community to be tested at Elder](http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/campus/a-new-kind-of-housing-residential-community-to-be-tested-at-elder-1.2144757)

This is very similar to how the University of Chicago does housing, and it seems to work out really well for them.

At this point…my top 5 are:

1835 Hinman

Slivka

allison

hinman lincoln
5.shepard

any ideas if the list is good or another dorm choices, with me looking for a quiet and clean enviornment? i may have to sacrifice the proximity to good food :P

allisons sort of the odd one out on that list. its still fairly quiet, but it definitely has the big dorm feel and I wouldnt call it super clean. that being said Its my favorite dorm on campus.
