TFeduardo12 - I brought my dad to Pittstart because I thought there might be useful information (he’s paying for my college). While there was some useful information about the PittPay and whatnot, overall he found it boring. I also ended up not seeing him very often. I’d suggest not bothering, personally.

Confounded92 - Like I said, it really seems to be hit or miss. It’s based on a lot of factors - are you an athlete, are you rooming with an athlete, are you honors, etc. I don’t think you’re 99% likely to get your first choice, but there aren’t any statistics. Based on my own observations (as I said, I saw 30+ people get their assignments at my PittStart) you aren’t extremely likely to get your first choice - maybe 40% likely. But again, that’s completely my guess, not set-in-stone. Guys seemed to be more likely to get their choices for some reason, I think because girls had the option of Holland, which very few girls actually chose (so Pitt can assign more to it rather than to Towers, etc).

Also, Pitt underestimated how many people needed housing this past year, so people kind of got shoved where ever they could fit them.

I honestly wouldn’t worry about it. Coming from someone who didn’t get their first or even second choices, I LOVED where I was put. It’s all what you make of it - and it’s a lot easier if you don’t walk into with preconceived, blanket notions of what a dorm will be like. Trust me, you’ll love where you end up!

I think more moms attend PittStart than dads. I had a great time with the many parents I met and didn’t see my daughter hardly at all; she would have been just fine had I dropped her off, but I wanted to get a little familiar with campus as well. You know, so I can post and be helpful on CC. hahaha

Regardless of the method used to place students in dorms, I have very little say in the matter. I think I might just wait and see. After all, my PittStart is in two weeks anyways. And yes, your input did help :)

Alright, so I got accepted to Honors Housing. The question is, how is life in Forbes Hall as compared to Towers (specifically Tower A). I have to either accept or decline my invitation to honors housing by my second day of PittStart, so I can’t really wait and see if I’m placed in Tower A. Is it worth declining or should I just see what they place me in? I take it that I would meet a lot more people in Tower A, but I don’t know how likely I am to get my first choice.

Also, I forgot to ask, do they allow you to have people overnight in honors housing? Aside from the studying, are the students/RA’s in honors housing more uptight than those in normal housing?

Sure. (But please make sure your roommate is okay with it–really).
In my experience, no.
To be honest, it’s more or less up to the individual how his/her college career is going to go. (And whatever your housing decision may be, keep in mind that you can spend as much or as little time in your dorm as you want–it’s always nice/easy to befriend people elsewhere). Good luck!

DD thought that the Forbes rooms were a bit larger than her room in Sutherland (this is not based on measuring,so it could just be that with all of her stuff, her room seemed smaller). Any opinion on whether the rooms in Forbes are larger than Towers? I know the singles are tiny because DD is on one this summer.

I called panther central and I was told that freshman are notified of their housing placement in late June/ early July. I need to accept/decline honors housing by Friday. If I accept honors housing and am later placed in Tower A, can I withdraw my acceptance of honors housing? Once I accept, is it set in stone? That is, am I no longer considered for other housing?

If you accept honors housing, that’s the housing that you’re given, and why would you also be offered Tower A later? That’s the way I think it works, but call back Panther Central to be sure.

At this point, I guess my only option is to accept or decline by Friday. Are there any substantial advantages to living in honors housing? I feel that I could still take advantage of any UHC perks even if I live in normal housing.

hey so i got a quad in holland hall with 3 other roommates. does that mean all four of us are living in the same room or is there a suite-like arrangement?

how bad is it that my pittstart is the third to last one (july 26-27)? i’m doing the conditional accept. pre-pharm track (2 yrs of prereqs 4 yrs pharm school) so will i still be able to get math/science classes i need for 1st semester?

What I’ve noticed from scheduling my classes is that a lot of the intro classes have much more availability than the higher level classes of the same discipline. For example, I passed out of Gen. Chem. 1 with my post-secondary credit, but I couldn’t sign up for Gen. Chem. 2 this semester because it was already filled up. There are MANY more seats available in Gen. Chem. 1 than 2. The only downside to having a late PittStart is that you might not get the teacher you want (if you’ve used ratemyprofessors.com). On the other hand, there are classes that have reserved/restricted seats just for PittStart students.

Returning to my earlier housing concerns, it turns out that by turning down Forbes I missed out on other housing I would have liked. As it turns out, those who turn down Forbes (provided they were accepted in the first place) are put on a list. There is a corresponding list with students who WANT to be in Forbes, so they do a 1 for 1 switch. This is the reason I was placed in a single in Lothrop Hall…which wasn’t a preference of mine at all . I’ve asked to be considered for other housing, preferably a double room in Towers (the chances are quite slim I assume). Disregarding the price difference for a single room in Lothrop, is Lothrop a good residence hall? Do the single rooms make it a less social living environment than Towers? I’ve heard mixed reviews about Lothrop…

Btw…sorry for another long post, I only do it because I’m thorough :)

It’s no surprise that the higher level classes will be more difficult to register for as a freshman because upperclassmen choose their classes before the incoming freshman’s PittStart. It’s mostly frosh that take intro classes like Gen Chem 1 so of course those classes won’t be filled until the freshman register. If you’re talking about classes that aren’t really intro courses there won’t be spaces reserved for PittStart kids. I would imagine it’s really hard to get a good spot in ochem or something like that as an incoming freshman.

And why would you turn down Forbes if you bothered to apply for it?

I only applied for Forbes because my mom wanted me to. I didn’t think I’d like it so I declined last minute. I was reassigned to Lothrop but I was reassigned again today to Tower A.

As soon as I was notified of my reassignment from Forbes to Lothrop (by email) I replied and asked to be considered for housing in Towers (upon availability). As soon as a spot opened up I was sent another email from the lady that was dealing with my housing issue. If you get an email like this it’s a good idea to accept ASAP b/c someone else might get the spot.

Sry it took so long to reply Hope I helped.
