Just got the mailing from RHL regarding bed sheets for BC dorms. Is it really necessary to order from these guys or can you just get your own twin sheets that are extra long? Is it a good deal? Do they really hold up?

My D ordered some things from them last year and we also bought items from Bed, Bath and Beyond and Target. Also, last year BC had an arrangement with Target whereby one evening (I think it was around 10:00 PM) all BC freshmen (who wanted to go) were shuttled to Target and turned loose to purchase what they needed. They had the entire store to themselves.

Here is a link about the Target excursion during Welcome Week [Events - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/offices/odsd/freshmanwelcome/events.html)

I’m puzzled by how unique BC makes their beds seem. Can a student confirm if they’re twin extra long, or if that’s not the right size.

Not sure if they are extra long or not, but they are not “unique” per se. You can get these sheets at stores such as BBB or Target. I really would not recommend ordering those things through BC though, the quality of the material is lacking and way overpriced (like most things on campus).

They are twin XL. Almost all colleges these days have twin XL beds. Right about now stores will be offering their “Back to College/Dorm supplies”. If you prefer to buy at stores rather than RHL, you will soon be seeing special sections in the store, you can’t miss them. Places like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Sears, Wal-Mart, Target, Home Goods, you name it. Because most colleges have twin XL, you’ll have a large selection of sheets and also bed sets twin XL, sheets and comforters. Don’t put off getting these things too long, like in August because by then the selection will have dwindled (These are seasonal specialties). We ordered the mattress pads thru RHL and are very happy with them. By the way, Bed, Bath & Beyond has a service especially for college students. You can purchase supplies at the BB&B where you live and when you are in Boston, you can go to the closest BB&B to BC and pick them up there. This comes in handy for kids coming from far away. Before you buy supplies, make sure they are allowed, i.e. no foam mattress pads. and so on.
two words: thread count!

(Great research item for an 18-year-old!)

While on the subject of dorm rooms, does anyone know the depth of the shelves that hang above most of the beds?? I was trying to get storage boxes for above there but I’m not sure which kind to buy

don’t order the BC sheets, they suck. everyone i know who bought them hated them because they wouldn’t stay on the bed well even though they did fit… just buy some at bed, bath and beyond or target!

I was gonna ask this same question! glad I saw this. I just got that catalogue too and I don’t really like any of the patterns for any of the sets. So we can all agree that it’s not 100% necessary to buy from this RHL thing? And BC has extra long twin beds that we can all buy sheets/comforters for in BB&B, Target, etc? noooot trying to buy a pillow through a catalogue that I haven’t even felt yet to see if it’s comfortable…

collegegirl01,

You do not have to buy anything from RHL. You do need to have twin XL sheets, comforters and mattress pads however. They also need to be machine washable/dryer friendly and very easy to care for. The things you need can be purchased at the stores mentioned above as well as other stores. If you already have items at home, then use what you have, you don’t have to buy new things. Have fun!
