Are freshmen allowed to live in Jones Tower? Everything I’ve read says that Jones is for graduate students only…
That is absolutely NOT true. Jones Tower did used to be graduate-only housing, but that’s not the case anymore. I don’t know how many floors (if any) are still reserved for graduate housing, but at least one floor (3rd floor) is reserved for undergraduate freshman. I applied for Jones this year as an incoming freshman, and a friend of mine (who is now a sophomore) applied very late for housing and still got a single in Jones as a freshman. This, however, was dumb luck. They told us during one of the campus tours that freshman rarely/never get singles, which is obviously not true, but priority does go to people who are handicapped, have medical issues and internationals who need to stay over winter/spring break (Jones is one of the few dorms that is open for the entire academic year). So my advice (if you haven’t applied already) is to apply to OSU as early as possible, pay your acceptance fee as early as possible and sign/turn in the housing contract (along with the $350 housing deposit) ASAP. Priority goes to people who turn in their contracts and make the deposit first (excluding, like I said, students who are impaired physically or for some reason NEED a specific type of room), so your chances of getting the dorm you want increase the sooner you turn everything in.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much! I sent my deposit in the mail the day after I received my contract online and I put Jones as my first preference. So let’s hope they put me there!
^Priority also goes to upperclassmen. It almost never happens that a freshman gets a single.
They just sent out the housing email. How did you do, linguinebug?
I got a 1 person room in Raney! I’m super excited right now!!
You are lucky!! The new dorms are really nice I heard. I ended up getting a single in Jones, so I’m super happy
Wow! Good for you!! We didn’t even try for a 1 person, not knowing that freshman had that option. My daughter got a 2 person super double and are so excited about that. At least she isn’t squished in a small room with 3 other girls. My oldest had Scott House her freshman year. She was the last class to live in that dorm building before they tore it down. It had super small rooms.
MomofSprinter, I did some research while I was waiting for my application to be evaluated and saw that very few dorms had a one person room. While I think I would be okay with one roommate, I don’t think I would do good with three of them in a small space. A 2 person super double does sound nice!
