Dorms for freshman at Ohio state?

What kind of dorm would I most likely get into at Ohio state as a freshman? I don’t want to live in a quad so a double would be ideal.

It depends on how fast you get your housing contract in and what you put as your preferences. I got into Jones Tower as a freshman (the room was a single with my own bathroom in the room). You’ll get to put in your top choices for room size and dorm.

@JBuck7 How fast did you get your contract? And if I could get a single I would like that but I feel like it is highly unlikely. I was thinking siebert double with the lofted beds. But I just am not sure what dorms would be best.

@erinivey13 I paid my acceptance fee within an hour of being accepted (applied EA). How fast you get your contract depends on when you turned your acceptance fee in, as it’s released on a rolling basis. I completed my housing contract within an hour of receiving it. For instance, for my top preferences, I put a single room in Jones, a double in Lawerence, and a double in Morrill, in that order. Preferenced single room over double, and ended up getting the single (despite many people at OSU telling me I’d end up in a quad as a freshman). So absolutely preference single first if that’s truly what you want, as you never know. There is a whole freshman floor in Jones, btw.

@JBuck7 Well I got accepted in December and paid my acceptance fee in January. I think I did it too late

That’s not even close to being too late. If you want Siebert, you’ll easily get it.

FYI, a couple weeks ago the housing dept told me they were changing this year. You will only request area of campus, not dorms. ie north, south, west and also something like room type or level (cost)

@Marakov29 okay. Do you think I could get a single?

@ballet13 really?

@erinivey13 yes, according to the person in the housing dept. You never know though… she did sounds knowledgeable and spoke about changes to the process this year. Still sounded like they were working out details.

@JBuck7 @Marakov29 what are the odds of me getting a double in smith-steeb? I know it’s limited availability. Also what are the odds of me getting a superdouble as a freshman?

@erinivey13 I think you have pretty good odds this year, as most people want north campus for the newer dorms (Smith-Steeb is still new though!). The thing is, if that’s what you want, you have to put that. I was told there was absolutely no way I was going to get a single as a freshman, and I still got one. I also knew someone who had a super-double as a freshman, but this was in one of the really old dorms.

@JBuck7 what dorms would you recommend are the best? Either for singles or doubles?

has anyone else called OSU housing to see if it is true you can’t request dorms, only location? Or maybe this is for incoming freshman?

We were just there yesterday for a Residence Hall Open House. They didn’t say anything about only being able to request areas of campus. They did say that most freshmen would get assigned to double rooms. The housing contracts will come out in order of when you paid your acceptance fee.

@erinivey13 Don’t know about the singles, there are definitely freshmen living in some though. If you already submitted your housing contract, I’d be surprised if you couldn’t get a double in Smith-Steeb or Park-Stradley; there are a lot of freshmen in there.

@Marakov29 they haven’t sent out the contracts yet

@erinivey13 the only singles I know about are Jones, which are roughly the size of a double. The bathroom is really tiny, but it’s in your room, so can’t really complain about that! I wasn’t sure how I’d do rooming with strangers and suddenly sharing a space with someone, so I knew a single was the right choice for me. I loved how quiet Jones was, and it was social on the weekends. My floor really had a nice community. There’s also one (maybe two?) super-single in Jones, which has a carpeted floor, a walk-in closet, and a full-size bathtub.

The doubles in Drackett/Taylor are the same size as the quads, but you also get your own bathroom inside your room. The doubles in Morrill/Lincoln feel larger, but you share a common area with other people and a large bathroom. I’m not too familiar with south campus dorms. For which room size is the best, it really depends on if you can live with other people in a cramped area, and if the atmosphere of your residence hall fits your personality.

@JBuck7 Jones seems to have a lot of dorms available, and I’d surely prefer my own space. I’m coming in considered as transfer student, but that’s because I already have a bachelor’s degree from another school. Do you think I’d have a good chance of getting a single dorm in Jones, or in another complex if I put my preferences down for only being a single?

@Virgo25AD I’ve heard that Housing is telling transfers that they cannot gaurentee on-campus housing for them, so I’m actually not sure! If you are able to live on-campus, I’d think you’d have as good of a chance as anyone else, since a lot of people want the new dorms and Jones has, in the past, been the grad student/upperclassmen/transfer dorm.
