Housing questions.

I'm almost posotive that I will be attending Occidental next year, and had a couple of questions about housing and what not....

First and foremost, my mom called them yesterday just to inquire about a couple of things, and the lady said that you could be put in a triple room even if you sign up for a double room. What shocked me was that, according to the lady, a triple room was the same size as a double room and they just put up a bunk bed to add that third bed. I find that to kinda ridiculous....is that true? Can I request that they not do this for me(Under the special accomidations part of the residence form)? and what is the chance that I will get a tripple?

Next, for those who have gone through Oxy, roughly how large are the double rooms? Could not find dimensions anywhere....

Finally, just a very general question, what is dorm life like at Occidental?

chill, its a dorm it is not going to be amazing. I have heard that many other colleges will place you in a triple if they run out of freshman dorm space. The chances that you will be placed in a dorm are dependent on how fast you register for housing. The sooner you register the better chance you get of not being in a triple. At least that is what I have heard about collge housing in general.

I have no problem with a triple, its just usually if you get a triple room it is not just a double with a bunk bed. When my nrother went to CU Boulder their triple rooms were much larger then the double rooms.

It’s not gonna make or break me going to Occidental, I am going, it would just be nice not to have three people crammed into a room intended to be a double.

I would call the housing department and get the dimensions. My D’s frosh year, she was a triple crammed into a double, at Haines Annex. They absolutely made do; what was most lacking was the closet space. She loved that she met lots of upperclassen who resided in the main portion of the building. I don’t know if that arrangement still exists.

Many, many, many colleges have this same situation. This was fall of 2007, and I believe they were constructing another residential hall up the hill, so maybe this arrangement has eased the entire picture. Obviously, there was an adjustment in the cost of the triple, too.

I wouldn’t freak out over this. This ended up being a challenge for these three girls (along with many, many other freshman), and they managed, and had a fun first year. Part of college is the learning/growing.

Check to see if your hall is airconditioned. If not, buy a clip-on fan. It’s hot there sometimes.
