Housing Questions

I was just wondering, is there a huge difference between a regular floor and a quiet floor? I guess I would prefer to have a quiet environment to study in but I wouldn't want a floor that is dead quiet all the time with no fun at all - is that the case with a quiet floor?
And, are there quiet floors in every freshman dorm? (aka in all four buildings?)

And, do most ppl choose to participate in CHARMS? or do most people just wait for them to match you?

I wanted to know the exact same thing!(even though I’m pretty sure that I would choose a quite floor. I’m a very light sleeper.)
Also, what is the difference between a single sex floor and mixed one?
Single sex floor seems more comfortable but more boring.

I just finished my freshman year, and I would say that no matter how many times you get woken up at 4 in the morning, it is worth it. The quiet hours for a regular freshman dorm is 9-9 on weekdays, and 12-9 on weekends. During finals period, it is round-the-clock quiet hours, where there is no warning for a fine ($50). If you want a quiet study space, use the library, don’t live on a quiet floor just to have quiet space to study. And as far as location, I don’t even know if there was/where it was located this last year. It certainly was not in New South. There was only one single-sex floor this past year; an all girls floor in harbin. I would definitely recommend a coed floor.

did you guys all receive the ID Nets? and by email or by mail? I can’t wait to submit the LPQ form but haven’t received anything else yet far.

I lived on a coed floor in Harbin my freshman year and loved it. It was a great way to meet people. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

I got mine by mail.

Are the coed dorms by floor? by wing? or everyone mixed together? Do males and females share a bathroom?

From the tour, it depends which freshman dorm you are in. There is one all girls floor in Harbin that you can request. Girls and boys never share a bathroom, in Village C West you have your own bathroom. Harbin is single sex by cluster, but other than that everyone is mixed together.

New South (and Darnall as well, I think) are split down the middle for guys and girls. As previously stated, Harbin is by clusters. And VCW is every-other room

I’m going to jump in on this one… So, choosing either quiet or single-sex won’t really influence which dorm? Personally, village c appeals to me (private bath–haha), but I didn’t know if there was a way to work around the PLQ to give off the interpretation that I wanted that hall? lol :)

From what I’ve heard from friends who lived on a quiet floor, there was little difference in decibel-level, but rather there was far less alcohol consumption. Incidentally, the community of the quiet floor was unusually strong.

I’ve read somewhere that VCW, Harbin, and Darnall all have quiet floors, but I have heard things that made me skeptical of that. In any case, choosing a quiet floor does insure you won’t be placed in New South.

At least personally, I find it hard to imagine living my freshman year with only members of my gender. I simply think it doesn’t create as robust a community as a more diverse floor would allow. That being said, I did have a female friend who lived on a single-sex floor, and she didn’t seem to mind.

There wasn’t only one same-sex floor, there were some in every building including in VCW an all-girls and an all-guys floor. I lived on the all girls floor (not by choice but by assignment) and it turned out fine…kinda quiet and less social than some like, but I was fine with it.

ok, so here’s what i’ve come to gather – because i, like waitinginruralwv, am trying to mack a room in vcw.

there’s a 25% chance to get into vcw. now, if you choose a single sex floor, you’re automatically at 33% because new south has no single sex floor. if you’re a guy, then you’re at 50% because harbin only has a singly sex girls floor.

but what you’re left with is either your number one choice – vcw – or the horrifying prospect of darnall. the main question, then, is whether darnall or vcw has the quiet floor. i’m not sure whether darnall has single sex floors, because if they don’t, vcw is all that remains. if they do, well, damn.

VCW has a living well floor, that much I know. That may be a living-learning community, however.
