What are each of the dorms known for? Ive read that South is where the party scene is?

guys im looking at housing and i have no idea which dorms are the closest to class! there are so many, but they are all listed by street? help!! :(

south campus is farther from classes, but thats what the campus shuttle is for =] or you can walk and keep off that freshman 15 lol. south is where a lot of freshman are. also, south is more suite style dorms, while north campus is corridor style. i heard south dorms are a bit dumpier?

tina-- are you staying in north or south? North dorms do look a lot nicer, but I like the suite style better.

So how far is the north from classes? And when you say south is closer to classes can i assume youre talking about freshman classes? which is a bigger partying scene? north or south?

ann-- im definitely going for south campus, and i like suite style too!

chainz--hmm i honestly dont know about the partying scene, all i know is you'll probably meet new people easier on south campus. according to what people have told me, north campus is about 5 min from classes as opposed to 15 for south? dont quote me on that, hopefully someone can clarify

South is a bit more of a party scene. My brother lives on north, but has friends in south. the north seem a bit quieter, but they are also closer to franklin street. the north are closer to most of the classes (from what i have gathered), and south is closer to the atletic facilities, (football field etc.) both have their ups and downs im sure. I like the idea of suite living, but i also like the north campus dorms, so i guess i'll just have to see how it plays out!

I've been advised by all my friends at UNC to live on South campus freshman year. Many of my friends cannot imagine having lived anywhere else as freshmen. South campus has the most freshmen (though there are freshmen in every dorm) and is very, very social. You will meet a ton of people and have a blast. South campus dorms are kind of dumpy (they're just old), but nothing brings people together like a dumpy dorm, lol. North campus dorms are closer to campus, are generally nicer, and have a smaller population of freshmen. I would aim for South campus your freshman year and then work your way up to Middle or North campus.

what dorms are on south campus?

morrison, hinton james, ehringhaus, craig

which ones would u recommend for freshman, I need A/C! lol

well, the directional dorms on south all have AC, along with most of north campus. however, you cant request a specific dorm (like ehaus south or hj north) that has AC since on the housing app you can only put down what COMMUNITIES you want. its up to the housing ppl to put you in either the nicer directional dorm or the dumpier original dorm within that community

the ones that are good for meeting other freshmen are unfortunately the dumpier ones like hj

I was at Carolina this past weekend and we walked from Franklin Street down to the baseball stadium. This was a hike and not on flat ground. I would go walk it before making a decision if you can. Sure you could get a ride, but everyday. Most undergraduate classes are approximately a block off of Franklin St., so south campus is a long hike. My daughter said no way, she doesn't not care how many freshman stay on south campus. You will definitely be in shape if you stay on south campus. We didn't even walk all the way to south campus. We were sitting in the baseball stadium and you can see Ehringhaus dorm behind the stadium. There are a few more dorms past this one. Just look at a map - and put your walking shoes on.

Personally I like the idea of walking to class because it's your time to be outside and it's a pretty campus. I used to park at
Ram's Head this past fall semester for a Dual Enrollment Spanish class that I took there and the walk was really not that bad and it was very enjoyable. Ram's Head is not far from the freshman dorms and I'm excited about being able to stay in shape and walking this coming year. Plus, all students there that I know would have never stayed on North Campus their first year because it automatically excludes you from most freshman.

karipac07, I totally agree with you about all the walking. I am really looking forward to walking everywhere and staying in shape. Plus, UNC is gorgeous. : )

Is it true students CANNOT stay off campus during their first year?

^^Evidently it is not true. I know an incoming freshman who is staying off campus next year.

you can stay off campus, but it depends where you are talking about. Granville towers is a little off campus. They suggest that you live on campus for the first year, but in all it's your choice.

are there any residence halls that are on north campus that are suite style? if not, which residence hall on south campus is nicest and which is nearest to most classes?

morrison is the nicest on south since its newly renovated but chances are you wont get into it lol, the next nicest south dorms are the directional dorms like ehaus south or hj north, but you cant specifically request them on the housing app..you have to put down the communities (i.e. HJ, ehaus, craig) and just hope you get put into the directional dorm within that specific community
