Housing Sign-Up Question! Major Help Needed! LOL

I might be just me, but this whole housing application is so mind boggling. I am SO confused! Lol.

So my question is do I have to physically mail in a housing form (if so, where do I find this form) or is everything done through MyHousing? I thought that everything could be done online. I electronically signed the housing contract and I have requested the dorm I want to be in as well as my roommate. Is there anything else that needs to get done?

Also, on the housing website it says that students who have never lived on campus must pay a non-refundable $40 housing fee. Is this true for incoming freshmen or just for those who currently attend the school?

Any questions answered would be awesome! I have emailed housing but they still have not gotten back to me :(

I think my sibling did every thing online.

Since your in the dorm selection process, mine telling me about certain halls: Holden, Holmes, Wonders, Brody, Hubbard, Wilson, Case

Okay well if that's the case then I'm done with all the housing stuff. I think I should just send in the actual forms just to be on the safe side though.

This is what I have heard about the dorms from all the people I have been talking to.

Holden: It was recently renovated and it looks AWESOME. This one seems to be a fun dorm to live in. It houses mostly freshmen with a mix of underclassman. In my opinion, it has good location being close to the football stadium and basketball arena. Suite style rooms are also a plus to this dorm.

Holmes: This one seems to be one of the nicer dorms, it just has a horrible location. Rumor is that the food is pretty good. It houses the Lyman Briggs college so there will be lots of kid going into the field of science. It also hold a lot of honors college kids. I think that atmosphere there will be much more studious compared to that of Brody. It also has suite style rooms so there is more privacy

Wonders/Case: These two are both in the south complex which makes me kind of favor them. I like the close proximity to the sporting games. They both have suite style rooms with a mix of upperclassman. Wonders apparently has some really good food (along with Wilson which is also in south). Wonders also has a small gym in it and good study lounges. Case houses the James Madison College so I don't think you are allowed to live in it unless you are part of the program. It also has an honor floor I believe.

Brody: Obviously, this one would probably be one of the more lively areas to live. It is filled with freshmen so you are bound to meet TONS of people. They all have community style bathrooms which has it's pros and cons. I think the one issue I have with Brody is that is has way to much partying going on and not enough school time. Also, I heard kids can't get away with a lot of things at this dorm or they will be written up (Current students, correct me if I'm wrong). Brody dorms also have bigger rooms then those in the south/east.

Hubbard: I personally really liked this dorm, but absolutely hate the location. It has suite style rooms and a good study lounges. I think that if you live here, you can get away with a lot of stuff. I think that this dorm has a good mix of partying and studying.

That's pretty much all I have heard about the dorms. If you have a facebook, you should join the Accepted MSU group. It has tons of information about dorms that others students have shared.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I'm actually a junior in high school, but do plan to apply to Michigan State University my senior year. How did you manage to narrow your choices down?

I think if I was to apply for housing I may select Brody ( but I actually don't know). Due to meeting students, environment ( though community bathrooms is sorta a negative) etc... The way I'm thinking, if you ever wan't to stay in Brody do it your freshmen year... because thats whos placed there. Holden, Wilson, Hubbard, Holmes etc... are all selections that can be made sophomore etc... along with McDonald.

I honestly wouldn't mind staying anywhere but in the east. I just really don't want community bathrooms even though Brody does have bigger rooms. I put Holden as Wonders as my first two choices though.

I don't think those were awful choices... but may be most sophmore +.

Everything is done through MyHousing, I believe. The $40 dollar fee does not apply to incoming freshmen, it's just for current students that moved off campus and now want to move back into the dorms.

I've lived with community bathrooms before, and honestly it's not that bad. Yeah, it's a little bit more convenient to have the bathrooms in your room, but it's not a huge deal to take stuff to and from a community bathroom.

Lol, sorry just everyone hates them soooo much.

Yeah, I mean the bathrooms are probably very germy... not upkept as they should be.

Thank you! I emailed housing and the replied with the same thing :)

I don't really have a problem with community bathrooms, I would just prefer a more personal one. Also, I LOVE the south complex but at the same time I wouldn't hate it if I lived in Brody. Haha I'm really flexible when it comes to housing. I just REALLY don't want to be stuck in the east.

i applied for housing a few days ago and did everything online, so i think you're all set. i have a lot of friends that are currently freshmen at msu, and, from talking to them, i requested wilson, holden, and wonders as my top choices. i've been in all three dorms before and there are tons of freshman in all three (especially wilson and holden). i also know people living in brody, and they don't mind the community bathrooms. i'm pretty sure their cleaned twice a day (that may not be the exact number, but whatever it is, i've never heard anyone complain about them being dirty or gross).

sarahrachel any specific reason why you selected wilson, holden, and wonders?

mostly because of talking to people that live there (i also know people that live in brody). i've been inside of holden and wilson and i liked them both, especially holden because it was recently remodeled. in both dorms, i met lots of freshman, so i'm not really too worried about there being an overpopulation of upperclassmen. i've also been inside a few of the dorms in brody neighborhood, and i actually didn't think they were that bad, but i prefer suite style to community so i didn't put any of those dorms down. plus, everyone complains about how far away brody is from everything.

Yeah Brody is a far distance, but you have a good CATA system, bikes, and many sidewalks to walk on.

If I get accepted into Michigan State University I had Brody, Wilson, Wonders, Holden, etc... on my list. Rethinking about Brody due to community bathrooms/ may not have a cafertiera to eat at.

Junior in high school

Oh, and if there is anytime you would like to stay in Brody... it's your freshmen year. Though I guess meeting upperclassmen would be sorta nice, but that could be likely joining clubs.

I definitely would not want to live in Brody next year, they're renovating the caf, so eating is going to be a pain.

Would the cafertiera be finish by the time I'm a freshmen? I'm currently a junior, and will be applying to MSU for fall 2010.

It should be done by then, according to the State News.
The State News: Massive Brody cafeteria renovation to begin soon

Thanks, but I've found out that now it's spring 2011.

You can find the reading on this website:

University Housing | Division of Housing and Food Services | Michigan State University

Listed before you start reading about Armstrong

That's when the entire thing will be done. The second floor (the main dining area) will be open again in 2010, so if you end up living in Brody you won't be eating out of trailers like people will be next year.
