Housing system for incoming freshmen

I’m trying to understand how students are assigned housing and the different dorm options. My D and a few of her high school friends are hoping to room together, either in a quad or 2 sets of doubles in the same dorm They are also considering several Michigan Learning Communities, partly to have more control of their dorm selection, although there would still be an interest in the Learning Community. It seems like they run the risk of some getting into a particular MLC and others from their group not being admitted into the same MLC, thereby not staying together as a group. (I know…they’ll meet lots of new, interesting people at Michigan and should be open to splitting up.) If they all choose substance-free housing are they likely to be together? Are there quads that are substance free? Is a quad really 4 people in one room, or 2 doubles connected? Only two dorms specifically mention quads on the housing page…Couzens and Fletcher, although I think Oxford Houses have quads. (They are trying to avoid Northwood Apartments and most anything on North Campus.) I’ve mentioned to my D that an all-girls dorm choice would probably work in their favor, but I got an eye-roll. Any perspective on how to “work” housing for the best options for multiple students?

If you do not apply to MLC and has a roommate, your chance of going to North Campus would be even higher. The priority go with the lower roommate. The larger the group, the worse the chance as they go with the lowest priority of the group.

I don’t have any advice particularly because I went in blind without a roommate selected, but I will say that if they end up in Fletcher or Oxford, that’s really no better than ending up in one of the dorms on North Campus. Fletcher in particular is not ideal in my opinion. (My current roommates lived there in a triple freshman year.) The closest dining hall is South Quad and there wasn’t bus service two years ago on the weekends so my roommates were stuck walking ten minutes in the middle of winter to get food. But billscho is correct, the more roommates you request, the more likely you are to get onto North Campus or Oxford/Fletcher.
