Housing: What to Do?

hey, so i checked my bursar account and i was charged $3270 for first semester housing. Doubling that gives me the cost for a non-AC single. Now this is the absolute last thing I wanted. I definitely do NOT want a single.

Is there anything I can do??

call them asap

how did you find out how much the room cost?

Log onto aces, and under finances they have your updated bursar account. Then look at the list to find how much your east campus housing cost is.

JD-- did you fill out your housing forms late/past deadline, by any chance? Because if you did, then yeah, Duke is going to stick you with whichever room needs to be filled. I honestly don't know how much calling Duke will help out unless there was some bizarre mistake where they accidentally mixed you up with someone who really did want a single. Living in a single really isn't going to be that bad -- East Campus dorms are naturally social and you can just keep your door open and always visit friends (or have people visit you whenever you want!)

i did fill out the forms late...i was accepted off the waitlist after the deadline, but as soon as i got my netID i emailed res. life w/ my form. is there anything i can tell them when i call that will help me get into a different room because I really really dont want a single?

thanks

oh... and what about applying for reassignment, how does that work???

honestly, that has probably everything to do with the room you were given. it sucks, i know, but there's probably little housing can do at this point -- esp. being so close to distributing roommate assignments. i don't really know how the process works, and i'm sure that over the summer, there's little (if anything) done re: reassignments it's for the kids who can't financially live in an air conditioned room. i'd say give them a call first thing tomorrow morning, explain your situation -- see if there's anything they can do (maybe move around someone who had single ranked #2 on the pref list and you can take their space) -- but there is a strong likelihood that they can't do anything.

the room costs about 2400 per semester. is that a non-ac double?

yeah...a non-a/c double is 2475

wanna trade?? haha

light bulb....what if I say I can't afford a single? after all I am on some financial aid. if i say that will they just give me more aid or actually switch my housing assignment? i know i'm going out on a limb, but I really don't want a single. I just feel like everythign would be a lot easier if I HAD a roommate and i think it would be a much better match socially for me.

thanks for all your help guys

I'll let you know when both housing and financial aid return my e-mails (which will hopefully be tomorrow). I asked them the same questions as you.

I'm actually really surprised that they would give a single to someone who didn't pref it - usually there are more folks who want singles than singles. Definitely get on the horn with housing and they should be able to figure something out.
