Housing

Congrats to all of you for getting into Columbia! Hopefully, I'll get to meet some of you in the fall.

Does anyone have any insight on the housing options (Carman, Furnald, John Jay, LLCs)? Which one do each of you personally prefer?

Also, a link for those of you just as confused as I am: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/housing/docs/incoming-students/first-year-students.html

there are many a post about freshman housing on the main columbia board, u might want to go check those out.

Hi vrgulati. I've taken a look at the main four for first years... from what I've gathered, Carman and John Jay are the most popular for freshmans, with JJ being "quieter", and possibly more... traditional? Furnald appears to be more of a social domain, and H&W offer that LLC program thing.

At the moment, I'm feeling a tendency towards H&W, but that's only because I saw the photo of their lobby/lounge, and there are columns (eeee! Columns! Drool) and a grand piano...

I live in Australia so I've only had the email decision... have you received your letter/package yet? Do they have any housing/dining information in there?

I've posted numerous times on housing before, but I just wanted to add something I never really touched on before:

SINGLE VS. DOUBLE

Honestly, some people just aren't meant to live in doubles, and will detest it no matter what. I know of so many friends who, wanting to get the "full college experience," forced themselves to opt for doubles this year and had an unhappy roommate experience. Columbia does offer an unusually large number of singles (esp. for first-years) and I believe you are pretty much guaranteed one if you request it.

I'm not trying to say "stay away from doubles," but if you know that you're a very private person and need your own space, please don't feel pressured to try a double for the sake of trying a double and having a roommate. You can bond just as easily with your floormates as you would with a roommate.

I had a single this year and loved it. I was not anti-social. I've made plenty of friends and I don't think my closest friends and I are any less close than we would've been had we lived together (on the contrary, we probably would've gotten on each other's nerves).

Furnald is by no means social .... avoid it like the plauge. Instead go for John Jay.....its so much easier to meet lots of people

really? Furnald is that anti-social? I heard that they had a kitchen and that you could have a single.
So if I want to stay in a single and still be able to eat my kimchi and other sort of smelly things, which should i choose?

Furnald is not anti-social. I have plenty of friends who live in Furnald and who get out just fine. It does have the reputation for being the quietest dorm though (when ppl refer to it as anti-social, they're really just referring to Furnald's lack of partying).

If I don't drink and stuff, would Carman be a bad choice?

to answser ur question simply....it wouldnt be the best chioce since its probably harder to get away from it in Carmen.

to answer it more fully....i didnt drink in HS either but college is different and u cant exactly say for sure that u wont drink in college. The biggest consideration you should be making is whether you want to be assigned a random roommate or whether it'd be a better idea to go for a single. But, its college, theres drinking anywhere, get over it.

Yeah, I know, I'm not going to not drink in college, I was just wondering if there are mass amounts of parties that I couldn't avoid if I chose to in Carman and such... obviously there is drinking everywhere and I don't have any problem with that of course.
