Housing

I got accepted in december and applied for housing the first day it was available. Will honors housing still be available?

My D signed up Oct. 1 for housing and got accepted early to UT. I'm pretty sure she will get San Jac but now she has decided there is someone from school she would like to room with. The problem is the girl she wants to room with didn't apply as early as my d. Will UT give her a room in San Jac with this girl or will they give preference to roommate choice and put them in Jester? I guess other alternative is that they would put her in San Jac with someone else?

kikib, there are alot of girls at Towers. It is true that Towers is kind of the place to live for freshman fraternity guys, but there are still a bunch of girls, and it is a nice dorm. Each room has a bathroom, living area, kitchen and dining area so it is more like a small apartment than a dorm room. Go check it out when you are visiting Austin.

oh oops, I didn't notice that the link was already posted.
So from what I understand, you pay $50 housing deposit (nonrefundable) as soon as you can beginning in October, $200 enrollment deposit (refundable before May 1st) after you are admitted, and then they e-mail you the housing contract which you return within 10 days and pay another $300 advance payment (refundable before May 1st). I don't know whether honors dorms fill up so quickly that $500 should be deposited before I even hear back from other colleges.

This is also a good time to sign up for the orientation sessiion you want. It says the money for orientation week is not refundable if you cancel less than 2 weeks in advance, so it must be refundable if you cancel May 1.

There are two orientation sessions in July, after AP tests results are available. So if you go to an orientation session and register for classes in June, there may be more open classes, but if there is any doubt in your mind about how you will do on AP tests, the July sessions are appealing.

I am still a bit confused on which gives you preference in selecting dorms.

From the website:

"Apply for on-campus housing as early as possible beginning at 6 a.m. Central Time on October 1 (even before you apply for admission). Applying early gives you the best chance to live in the residence hall of your choice if you’re admitted to the university."

"You won’t be officially offered a housing contract unless you’re admitted to the university and until you accept your admission by fulfilling your enrollment deposit."

So basically I am undecided on my college. If I wait until April to accept my admission to UT, I will then receive a housing contract.

Now, is it the date of the application that marks your spot in line or the date of the housing contract? People have said the date of the housing contract in this thread, but the website seems to suggest that it is based off of the housing application date.

Can anyone give me a definite answer on this?

When we visited Texas, the admissions officer putting on the information session for admitted students told us it was the date of the initial $50 deposit (the application). The tour guide said that, too. (He said he had applied for housing in April and he ended up in supplemental housing, but that it turned out to be fun.)

Ok cool thats what I thought but I got the impression from this thread that it was your contract that mattered. I was a little worried. Thanks.

Yeah, I was a bit confused too. Because what if someone applied on the first day that the housing application was availailable (their first choice was Duren), but could not decide on a college until April. Then there was another person who applied for housing later (their first choice was Duren as well) but knew they wanted to go to UT in, say, November. They accept their offer of admission and pay all their dues. Since they have already committed to Texas and since they have already recieved their housing contract wouldn't they get Duren before the person who had not committed? Would they hold a spot for the person who applied earlier? Sorry, but its so very confusing.

Whew if that's the case, then I feel WAAAAY better about having accidentally missed turning in my housing contract by the deadline. Because I got up at the butt-crack of dawn to pay that $50 deposit on Oct 1 hoping to secure my spot in line for the dorm I wanted.

so what if i didn't submit my housing app til near the end of october, i got admitted in november, and i just now paid the 200 dollar deposit. do i have any shot of getting into the blanton honors dorm?

Someone said in another post that if you don't apply for housing in October, you will end up in Jester because it is less often chosen and has the most rooms. But you did apply in October. It just depends on how many people applied before you and made honors housing their first choice. Good luck! Hope you get the housing you want.

Does anyone know how high the demand is for honors housing.

And for whoever asked earlier, the person who applied first in october would get duren over someone who applied later but committed in november.

I called Housing today and the person I talked to said that they go by when the $50 housing deposit was turned in. I asked if this meant I could still get in an honors dorm if I completed the housing contract on April 15th (the deadline), and she gave me an ambiguous answer like "We can't say for sure. We usually don't start going through housing until after April 15th...but you never know, we may start earlier this year".

If someone else wants to call, the number for the Division of Housing and Food Service is (512) 471-3136

I guess they don't like people who wait to make up there minds.

^^That is what I was thinking. It seems as if you are punished for wanting to consider you options.
