houston hall and tilton hall

Any insider info about Metcalf? I did hear the rooms are considerably big, true?

Any thoughts on Lewis Hall for a freshman?

Oooookay. Here we go.

Hill was all-freshman last year, and I think only the 5th floor was HL, but it's like 6 singles or something.

The fact that you requested all-freshman doesn't by any means mean that you got it, though - you lucked out in getting Hill, but there are tons and tons of people who requested freshman housing and ended up in mixed. After all, Tilton is 100 something, Houston is 200 something, I forget how big Hill is, but in the end your class is 1200ish people. For people who had their heart set on freshman housing and got mixed, trust me, I've been there, and there is a LOT to say for mixed housing. There are still lots of freshmen around, and the upperclassmen are by no means off-limits - talk to them, make friends with them, you'll find that often they're just as willing to add someone to their group, and if not they're GREAT for advice when you're confused about the way something works at Tufts.

Phew. Now that that's done - the people I knew from Metcalf last year were a great group and decided to live there again this year. They were really close and had dinner every day together at the exact same table. I think Metcalf has the biggest singles on campus but the smallest doubles. They also have some triples. Personally I think Metcalf has THE best location on campus, so smallish rooms are a small (no pun intended lol) price to pay. You're right on Professor's Row, basically the center of campus. The closer dining hall is Dewick (in my opinion, the MUCH better dining hall) and also close to Hodgdon Good-to-Go. The library is across the street, the campus center is to your left, and it's a much shorter walk uphill than it is for the majority of the downhill dorms. You're also much closer to Health Services and the frats. The only thing that rivals Metcalf by location is probably Richardson, but it's all-girls'. I'm sure you'll take advantage of it!

Lewis - I know a bunch of people who lived there and really liked it. As an outsider, I thought Lewis was confusing as hell in terms of layout, but I'm sure it's easier for residents. Lewis is interesting b/c it has doubles, singles, and a few apartments too. I know some of the wings are single-sex, not sure if this is true for the whole building. There's a nice big lounge on the ground floor and the Craft Center as well. But I'll warn you, people have said that every corridor of Lewis has its own unique, repulsive smell, lol, so maybe once you get there you'll invest in some air fresheners, haha. The rooms are pretty nice, unless you're in a forced triple. I know people who were in forced triples in Lewis, but the room in Lewis was HALF the size of a double in Hill, which made no sense. Anyway it's a good spot b/c you're right across from Hodgdon.

what are the fourth floor south singles like?

okay, WELL. The South singles are pretty decent-sized, esp. when compared to Wren singles (which used to be closets, literally.) The ceiling has a bit of a slant (against the back wall, if I'm not mistaken) and there's room for a bed, desk, etc. They're pretty nice!

But if your son/daughter is a freshman, they probably shouldn't have gotten a single...I only know one kid who got a single - perhaps you misheard over the phone?

I lived in Lewis last year! Woo! Okay, first things first, it's called "Lewis Hall Party Dorm". It's not the BEST place to live as a freshman because there are a lot of upper classmen, but it's still a really fun dorm. The RD, Cassie, is awesome. She sets up so many activities, coffee houses, and events for the dorm. The halls are set up to be kind of anti-social, but that just made my hall become incredibly close. You kind of have to make an effort to go meet people in other dorms, but its not a big deal. The rooms are a very good size and you have a walk in closet! The arrangement of the room works best to maximize space if you put one bed against the windows and one against the walls rather than side by side. I'll write more about Lewis later or message me if you have any questions.

Well if hill is all freshman and has 20 singles then at least 20 freshman (including myself) got a single, correct?

whoa, calm the hell down. First of all, I'm not a walking encyclopedia on the layouts and types of rooms in every dorm on campus. I had no idea it had twenty singles. And besides that, I wasn't even saying that Hill only had six singles, I was saying that the fifth floor consisted of only a few singles and was Healthy Living. This was in response to travelgirl's assertion that the fourth and fifth floors were HL. That said, I have no idea if I'm right, I did not live there last year but I seem to remember my friend from 5th floor Hill talking about it. And he even said that his RA bought their floor alcohol, so I guess the HL didn't really apply after all. By the way, I even said that Hill was all-freshman in my first response to travelgirl on page 1.

Sorry, I really didn't mean to sound accusatory at all, i was truly wondering wether Hill was indeed all freshman, and if there was a specific reason some were assigned singles.

i liked wren a lot. i think it has character. there are also some GREAT views on the upper floors. i think that the suite set up is much better for upperclassmen (sophomores spec) who want to pick an "area" aka apartment to live in with your group of friends.

as a freshman, it is fine. if you end up with good people in your suite, you will have a BLAST and make 7-9 friends quickly.
