How accurate does the movie "Breaking Away" portray IU and Bloomington?

Just saw the movie today, and I'm curious.

good movie

I enjoyed the movie, too, and it did show a lot of sights in the area. I don't know that the town-university rivalry is quite like the movie portrayed; at least, I have not heard of anything like that. But I don't live there, so I couldn't say for sure.

I haven't seen the movie but there does seem to be a bit of a town-university rivalry from what i've heard.

I grew up in Bloomington, and although I love the movie, there was no rivalry between the "cutters" and the University folk. I think everyone in Bloomington knows that the University is the towns bread and butter. In fact, I think the term cutters was invented for the movie. The quarries were great swimming holes when I was there, maybe not anymore. I was there for the filming of Breaking Away. I sat there all day during the bike race scenes but I can never see myself. I see lots of people I knew. I can't help but sing along at the end even though I graduated from UMich.

Thanks for sharing, jdplus3. Good to have the viewpoint of someone who lived there. :)

jdplus3, how do you compare Bloomington to Ann Arbor?
