How and how often do you visit home during the school year?

I will be attending college this fall and it appears my transportation during breaks will probably be the greyhound or some other sort of public transportation. I was interested in knowing other students way/ experience and cost of transportation during college.

I go home during major breaks (Thanksgiving, spring, Christmas, etc). I usually go home during summer but not this year. I drive home. Costs about $40 - $50 each way (depending on gas costs) for a 5 hour drive. I used to take a plane before I had a car. That was $80 - $100 each way.

During school breaks - Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring, Easter, and summer (sometimes). I rarely go home on the weekends. I drive myself for all breaks, when I didn’t have a car last year I found someone who lived somewhat near me to give me a ride.

I go to school about 4.5 hours away from my parents’ house. I have an apartment here, therefore I don’t have to vacate it during breaks like you do with on-campus housing. I only go home for the week of Christmas/New Year’s and spring break. This year I’m visiting for a weekend in June because of my sister’s HS graduation, and I’m visiting for a week in August because my family and I are going on vacation.

I know many people visit home a lot more often, but frankly I can only handle my family in small doses. I was going crazy by my fifth day of spring break. It also costs me $50-55 in gas round-trip to visit them, so I try to limit those trips whenever possible.

Quite often, I go to school a 20-30 minute drive/hour-long Metro ride away from home.

I live just over an hour away from school and I have my car on campus. I’m home usually every other weekend because my two weekend jobs are much closer to my house than to my school. If I don’t have to work, I don’t go home. If I do, I go home.

During freshman year I went home during spring break, thanksgiving, christmas and the summer. My friend’s mom and my mom took turns driving my best friend and I back and forth. I flew home for winter break since it was like $30 and then my mom drove me back.

This year I am going back for a week in the summer to get furniture for my apartment and then winter break. That’s it. Most likely flying there and my mom driving me back so I can bring back food and whatnot. I am thinking next year it will just be winter break if I am not going somewhere with my friends.

I live 20 minutes away from home. I went home for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, and I think I went home for an afternoon once for a doctors appointment. Oh, and Halloween. That’s it.

I wanted to take my baby nephews and niece trick or treating. :)

Can’t say for myself because I’m a senior in high school…but my brother attends a university that is about 45 minutes away and he comes home EVERY weekend/school break. I see way too much of him. Anyways, as for transportation, my mom just goes and picks him up from school every weekend. He is such a little kid.

You don’t get to say that until you’re in college and have proven you’re not going to do the same t hing.

I go home breaks only, because my school is almost 2000 miles away. I fly, clearly, as driving would take an obscene amount of time. Costs about $200-300 round trip. I certainly plan on coming home Thanksgiving (and winter and summer, but those I have to) next year as it is a holiday, but I’m actually considering staying for spring break. It just interrupted my semester, didn’t get work done that I needed to, etc. Be better if I stayed and did homework. But we’ll see how I feel next year. I do envy those who can go home whenever. Even if you don’t, it’s nice that you can if you ever really needed to.

Were it not for the fact that I would have starved, I would have stayed here for Spring Break, too. I really needed that time to be productive and didn’t get anything done at home because my mom would not stop talking to me. As if she can’t drive up for lunch whenever she wants. Not my fault she chooses not to. >.>

Major breaks only, except for one or two football games in the fall. I live about 3 hours away and I drive it.

About every 3 weeks (including breaks: fall break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break and Easter – yes…we do get a lot of breaks). I live just under 1 1/2 hours away from my school.

Thanks for replies

I suspect freshmen year students may tend to go home more than their previous years, I plan during my freshmen year to go home during the breaks and maybe Labor Day because I would ( after settling in) know what things I left at home that I need to bring back with me etc…

I live about an hour away from home. I used to go home about once a month, maybe more often when I lived in the dorms and wanted a break from people. I would usually only stay 1 night. Now that I have my own place and a job, I wish I had time to go home. I’m lucky to get to go home for breaks. I still have doctors appointments, shopping, and things like that back home, but all I do is drive there and back in the same day and don’t stay the night.
