How and what should I use to prep for the PSAT?

Hi guys! I'm taking the Psat this coming year and I really want to do well on it. I've planned to start studying over the summer, but I have no idea where to begin. Any advice?

bumppp…

Study for the SAT and that’ll prepare you for the PSAT, PSAT prepatory books and classes are a scam.

go to the college board website and buy old PSAT exams for $3 each (with answer keys). Look for the “Marketplace” (or something like that) section of the college board website

Oh ok. I’ll get a couple of those. Would PSat Barrons or Psat Princeton Review be better?

I don’t have much experience with the Barrons prep book, but i think the practice tests in the Princeton Review Guide accurately reflect the actual PSAT.

Hi!

I’m not sure if you’re a freshman or a sophomore right now, so here’s my advice for both.

Freshman/Rising Sophomore:

 • Don’t study that hard over the summer. This one doesn’t ‘count’.
 • The Princeton Review book has some awesome strategies that definetly increased my score by a lot.
 • Just go through the book once or twice over the summer and do a couple practice questions. Don’t overprep.

Sophomore/Rising Junior:

 • Why don’t you just use this summer to prepare for the actual SAT?
 • You could take the PSAT in October and then the SAT I in October/November.
 • Again, I recommend PR but also the Blue Book and the book of released tests. Barrons is also very good for math.
 • If you’re well prepared for the SAT you’ll be good for the PSAT. I studied (briefly) for my sophomore year PSAT using PR SAT and barrons math books and did decently well, especially for the little amount of studying I did.

Oh, I’m a Rising Sophomore. What would be a decent score for a sophomore>?

I took the PSAT this year as a freshman and scored a 171. The score sheet I got said that I scored in the 90th percentile of high school sophomores in the country. So, I guess you should aim for that score, but preferably higher. My goal is to score a 200+ next school year. I’m “studying” (or so you could say), by being subscribed to the SAT question-of-the-day email.

I just want to do well. It would be really nice to be a NAtional Achievement Scholar Junior Year.
