I’m entering community college as a sophomore who has 36 units due to ap credits. How do those scores affect me for admissions? Should I take fall and winter courses to succeed in transferring? Right now they’ll only see fall grades but will they see winter too? Will I be admitted or rejected solely based on those grades? Any input is greatly appreciated.
They like to see letter grades and will base the application on GPA up through fall. If you have winter session, you should definitely send them the grades so they at least see them. Ideally, in these circumstances, it is good to take a couple summer courses (this summer) to add some letter grades. Since you have not done that, based on what I think you said, i might suggest a slightly harder fall schedule and be sure to send the winter grades.
@Ohm888 So winter grades aren’t part of GPA right just fall? Should I take classes a lot of classes I can ace during fall then to transfer with a 4.0? Thanks to the 5 I got on ap stats and ap calc bc, I only need to take multivariable and linear algbera/differential equations (it’s a one semester course in my ccc) and also c++. I didn’t take ap Lang or lit in high school so I also need to take two English courses for the minimum requirements. Would it be advisable to do my stem courses in the fall and ace them and do English 1A in the winter where I might get a B?
Besides the major courses shown on assist and the minimum course requirements, what else do I really need to take?
Do English definitely in fall. They really want to see English, esp since you have so few courses. They might look at winter courses if you send them early enough but won’t factor them into GPA. How they use the info is up to them but it would have a positive result, I assume, if they see them and they’re As.
Are you majoring in CS? If so, keep in mind college of letters and science at berkeley will not accept AP to fulfill GE breadth courses. (They will however fulfill IGETC, which needs to be completed by spring for L&S at Cal.)
So major courses and English for fall and winter, with GE/IGETC done last or near last.
Be sure to note how AP credit applies to your target UCs’ prerequisite course requirements, since they may not all be the same as each other or your CC.
@Ohm888 As you saw in my other thread, I’m majoring in stats. Connecting those two threads together, I’m guessing I should prioritize on getting major and english first and then sneak in my IGETC courses where possible.
@ucbalumnus I know that the stats ap credit fufills the stats requirement and calc bc finishes the first two classes of the calc series according to assist
Also not to triple post, but I didn’t take 2 years of the SAME language in high school (languages offered differed at each school I moved to). Is it crucial I do a foreign language first semester?
Foreign Language is required as part of IGETC certification, highly recommended you take the second college semester of a foreign language at latest by your final Spring semester before transferring. Your language courses from high school will not satisfy the requirement since they were in two different languages, it only works if you took 2 years of the SAME language back in high school to fulfill the IGETC language requirement.
It needs to be two years high school same language. Yes, you need to take it at CCC for IGETC unless you test out of it. If you think you’re proficient ask your advisor about it.
@need2go2UCLA @Ohm888 Ok so in high school I took German my freshman year and Japanese my junior year. Is it safe to assume that the first year of the languages in high school are equivalent to the first semester in college and that I can just go straight to the second semester?
I’m not exactly sure how they do it. You need to show the CCC advisor your transcript. But in theory, yes, one year of hs language equals one semester college language. There are some CCCs that have accelerated semester courses that equal one college year. You need to work it out with your advisor.
Does your CCC offer German or Japanese?
@Ohm888 Yes, from what I see in their catalog they offer both languages. The reason why I might take German is because easier language and reason for Japanese is because it’s a more recent language for me.
@Ohm888 I also need to do an arts course and biology for IGTEC so I’m guessing I should just do that in spring?
Yes, IGETC can be done at the end.
If you have only completed first year high school German and Japanese, then you need to ask your college’s German and Japanese departments about what the correct placement in college German and Japanese courses is.
