I wish affirmative action was just completely done away with. I can understand that is is fair to be entitled to some sort of advantage as a minority student, but it's just not right for a person to get into an Ivy League school like Penn with a 1900 SAT just because they have minority status. I got a 1500/2200 and probably have a worse chance of getting in than her even if our other credentials were identical.

i agree...it's only fair to a certain extent. a student should be awarded with acceptance based on his/her academic/school reputation, not his/her minority status completely....

no offense but i think some people get so mad that they don't get helped that they forget the purpose of affirmative action
schools have been bias for so long towards african americans that the only way that the ethnicity can improve is through education, therefore generations need an incentive or help going to college to break the cycle that exists so often in our culture
furthermore most help is from standardized testing, not gpa or ecs, because urm don't have the income to provide early education (hence headstart) and the cultures are known for not focusing on education, or vocabulary through reading at an early age, which significantly helps standardized test scores
anddddd look at the population, compare the percent of asians in ivies to that of asians in the country, (same for caucasians) and compare that with urms that is why they use the term unrepresented minority instead of minority

African Americans accounts for 13% of the whole U.S. population, and Asians are like what, 3%? Asians are so overpresented..

How much emphasis does U. Penn. put on SATs?
Because the applicant does seem to be exceptionally strong in basically areas but that.

Affirmative action is stereotyping people in a way. Asians don't always have the income to receive good education and not all Asians are taught under the same culture. I personally don't have the kind of parents who are willing to spend money to provide me with top education or any instrumental lessons. Frankly, they don't really care where I end up in terms of college. My dad didn't even know what grade I was in when I was in 10th grade...
Now I'm applying for college, I will be compared to 3249023 other Asians who are thought to have studied in good high schools and have parents who are willing to help and sacrifice. I'm sure affirmative action is unfair to all the Asians who are in my situation.

you will likely get into Penn.

yea the cause of affirmative action is great. but it is unfair to people who are more on the 'other side'....Asians are only stereotyped to be good students who go to all sorts of tutoring classes to pull their scores/grades up. but to rigidly place all of them in that catagory is unfair.

the grades that everyone get is a reflection of his/her work. if a person gets 1900 and another 2200, then the discrepancy should be enough to tell you the difference between the two. it's not like asians are 'made' smarter or anything. that's stupid...so i honestly don't see why a school should accept a kid w/1900 SATs over another w/2200 just b/c he/she is rewarded under affirmative action. why should one be at an advantage for a reason like that while another is at an disadvantage b/c he is...asian?

minorities dont have the same opportunities as asians

yea affirmative action is sterotyping. i do feel bad, it helps urm but the flip side sucks. however it has a purpose because something needs to break the cycle

^tell me about it. Whats this about all men are created equal?

that all men are created equal before the rest of mankind gets a hold of them >.<

also I think the reason its ethnicity and not just economically is like in my situation my parents are hispanic never went to college but make over 200,000... yet they think its a waste of time for me to have a college counselor, sat tutor, or to pay for college when I can go to community college for free... sometimes its more ethnic differences than economic differences that make the difference.

i know plenty of asians who don't care and whose parents don't care either.

idk, it just makes me a little unhappy sometimes. but i'll have to live w/it.

I just don't get how our economy is capitalistic, which means freedom of enterprise. Businesses compete regardless of race. Some get more profit than others, and some have to go out of business, so we are efficiently using our resources. This efficiency is regardless of race. If African Americans want to get out of the cycle, then why can't we change how our economy runs too? Affirmative action is kind of making our education and work inefficient since some of those who have the ability (equal to resource) aren't getting the education they deserve. I do think something must be done to break the cycle for African Americans, but I just think it's really unfair for some people.

because, our economy is not fully capitalistic (bailout ring a bell), i find it funny how my simple chance thread has turn into a debate over affirmative action, to be fully honest i've learned through several conversations involving race, that most people do not fully understand why it exists since they are not black, which occurs in more than just affirmative action

i know our economy is not fully capitalistic, but the type of involvement from government is different from affirmative action.

Anyways..does Berkeley have affirmative action?

^ UCB does not...how else do you explain the deluge of asians?

socialism is more associated with equality of opportunity, and AA is more socialist in principle. people often say that AA is "liberal". psh yeah right. it's reverse racism that's more racist and sets different standards for different races. equality of opportunity? i don't think so!
instead, they should base it off of economic status rather than racial status. who's going to have a higher SAT score -- a rich hispanic or a dirt-poor asian?

back to the original poster -- you have GREAT chances, esp with your new 32 on the ACT. good luck to you!
