How are Ranks considered at JHU?

How are Ranks considered at JHU? I talked to the northwestern admissions officer and they said that most colleges are now ridding of the importance of ranking, rather they will only look at the rigor of the courses and how you have used the opportunities at your school.

i go to a very very competitive school and we are ranked around top 20 in the nation in terms of academics. that is why use a decile system instead of a ranking system. i've talked to my guidance counseler about ranking because, since it is so competitive a school, a high rank is hard to get. she said that most colleges will see that you are in the top decile (which i am not) for top students. otherwise, if you are not in the top decile they will just look at your coursework and how you fared in each course.

i don't know if this makes sense, but can someone answer my question and talk about the validity of the statements.

The stats indicate that JHU accepts a lot of students who are NOT in the top 10% of class ranking. I suspect they pay little attention to this due to the reasons you have mentioned.

Rank is a very unimportant factor in the admissions review -- overall class performance and rigor of curriculum is what the adcoms look at primarily (as the West Coast Admissions rep probably explained to you.) Rank is considered, but the high school profile is a big factor in how rank is looked at in each individual case. Every school in the nation ranks differently so it in many ways is a useless classification.
