I'm transferring to Wash U next year from a school whose social scene is dominated by Greek life/parties...it's all we do on the weekends (and lots of weeknights), really, and I'm kinda curious about what that's gonna be like at Washington.

So are parties easy to find? Are they fun? Do you have to be Greek to get in on them? Is the alcohol plentiful? Do lots of students go to them or is it just a certain sect?

i’m sorry but i think this is just a silly question. any school will have parties. college is dominated by 18-22 year olds who want to have fun, no matter what the academic caliber of the place is.

i’ve been to some great parties at wash u, but they’re not the only things happening on the weekends. Greek scene is active but not dominating campus life. the fraternities have houses and there are always events on the weekend. also, lots of upperclassmen live a few minutes walking distance from campus right near the Loop, so there’s always stuff going on in those areas, and then you can just go a couple blocks more to hang out on Loop before or after.

In terms of alcohol policy, the general feeling and “philosophy” that’s said to everyone at Orientation, is that the university treats you like an adult until you prove otherwise. You can’t have open containers in the dorm hallways and have keggers in the dorms (can you at any school, though?). Wash U isn’t a police state, but does have enough measures to make sure you’re being safe, responsible, and in control.

hopefully you’re transferring to Wash U for more than just social reasons, but you will definitely find what you’re looking for in terms of a social scene.

And of those people reading this thread that don’t want a party scene – you’ll be fine at Wash U, too. One of the best things about Wash U, in my opinion, is that there isn’t one thing that dominates campus life… not everyone parties, not everyone studies 24/7, etc. It’s all about balance here. You’ll go to some college parties, have low-key nights in, have weekends where you mostly study, weekends where you explore the rest of St Louis, etc. It’s not the same routine from night to night or weekend to weekend.
