I was accepted in the class of 2021 at wash u. Something I was wondering about is the party scene, specifically the use of drugs within the student body. In high school, I partied a lot, I do periodically smoke weed and am occasionally involved with harder stuff. Basically what I’m wondering is, do people party or ever use drugs? I know it’s not going to be as crazy as a state school, but I want at least some reassurance that I won’t have to give up my current lifestyle entirely. I guess it’s kind of too late anyway since I’m committed to wash u, but I just wanted some info.
Yes, people party. Yes, people smoke weed. I don’t know much about harder stuff (be careful!!) but there are rumors about certain frats involved with drugs, etc. I imagine you would have to find the right people. Most of the party scene centers around Greek life, but upperclassmen tend to drift away from frats parties in favor of bars. Big clubs (KWUR, Co-op, theatre, Green Action) and sports teams (rugby, frisbee) also have parties.
It’s hard for freshman to get into frat parties first semester unless you already have connections. Hard but not impossible. It’s just annoying how my friends at other schools get into frat parties without even trying and at WashU, you don’t always know what parties are happening when and some frats have lists and will literally turn you away from the door if you’re not on it. That being said, I still went out once a twice a week to the frats my first semester. Things get better 2nd semester.
