How are you all spending your summer?

Hi--

I've read in numerous admission books that colleges look for students who spend their summers doing something productive, but still enjoyable. Just curious-- how is everyone spending their summer? Are you working somewhere or going on a mission trip? Did you start a business or are you just preparing for the coming school year? Or maybe you're just chilling and enjoying your summer vacation.... :)

Thanks !

volunteering and working on my college app

My daughter has a pretty busy summer:

1 week at Girls State
1 week away at a fencing camp
1 week at Natl. Fencing championships
2 weeks away a foreign language immersion camp
2 weeks volunteering at a post-stroke physical therapy program
Completing an online financial literacy course (to fulfill State requirment)
Hanging out with friends
Hoping to get started on college essays

I am takin Abnorm Psych and personality psychology at a university. I am hoping to start a fundraiser for a non-profit organization. Hanging out with friends. AP CHEM summer work. SAT/ACT prep. Reading books…having a goooood time.

In response to the post above, i don’t think there’s much time for just “hanging out with friends.” haha. Im just joshing.

I’m taking two college courses at my local college. Other than that, reading and writing alot, preparing for Debate & Speech next year, going to friends’ houses, and spending far too much time on these forums. :P

Back when I was in high school I spent my summers sleeping, watching tv, playing video games, and wasting time on the internet.

I am currently taking a school requirement class and before that came back from a trip to Asia with some friends. Next week, I’m in Boston for debate camp for the next two weeks and then after that I am volunteering at our school’s novice debate camp.

Meanwhile, I’ve been filling out paperwork so that I may volunteer at my nearby hospital, worked on my permit work, prepared for debate camp, and read summer reading books.

Where to start, this has been the craziest summer to date.

Internship at the top Telecom Engineering firm in the world(one plus of living in Kansas, over 10+ Engineering firms located with in 30 minutes of each other)

Volunteered at a one week Engineering camp for 6-8th graders. Local state flagship(really fun)
3.1 week intense debate camp
4.Driver’s Education(I’m the youngest senior in my grade =)

FIRST robotics leadership meetings

Hmm, that sounds really good on paper. Really hectic though, loving every second of it.

No vacations for me. Just lots of work, but I’m loving every second of it.

But wouldn’t you love a vacation once in a while even more.

"But wouldn’t you love a vacation once in a while even more. "

By gosh yes. You never realize how great time off is until you’ve worked 40 hrs a week.

Then again I’ve started to prefer being alone. A nice vacation would be a week off where all I did was eat hot cheetos and watch Battlestar Galactica…

taking a class, preparing 4 next year, watching tv and wasting time on computer

Research internship with statewide environmental organization

Running a charity drive for local HIV/AIDS shelter

Working at a local restaurant (year-round job)

Reading and writing quite a bit

Prepping for SAT and subject tests (USH & Lit)

watching alot of TV (White Collar, Psych, Seinfeld, etc., etc.) & doing stuff w/ friends
Sounds pretty full, although #1 hasn’t started yet, and #2 is still in the planning phase :P
