How bad do two Ws look on my transcript of neither apply to my major? and are 1 year apart? I also will have 50 units done by the end of this semester

They probably won’t affect much of anything. Depends on school and major. That said if you’re probably going to be OK.

3.0+ you’ll probably be OK for UCI, UCD and UCSB and for 3.3+ you’ll be OK for UCSD. LA and B really depend.

3.54GPA here and I got into UCI, UCSB and UCR(along with CSUF and CSULB) in my first choice major. Didn’t apply elsewhere but likely would’ve been in at UCSD and UCD too. I failed calc2 hardcore long story lots of crazy BS, still got in everywhere. Ohh and I had a W in calc 1 from when I took it at age 16

I got into LA and Berkeley with 6 W’s, 5 in the same semester.

Yeah, 2 W’s don’t matter, and there are plenty of anecdotal stories of students with 8 W’s and 4 F’s, but a respectable overall GPA, getting accepted to Cal and UCLA. Those are obviously the extreme cases, which is why you’re pretty safe with 2 W’s.

Now, if it’s a situation where two students have the exact same application, aside from one student having 2 W’s, and only one can be accepted, they’ll take the student without the W’s. But this assumes the personal statements are identical, and they wouldn’t be. I suspect in such a case the personal statements would be the deciding factor, still with little importance given to the W’s.

I’m going to assume that the OP means W’s for only UCs, to which I say, read the FAQ thread.

in TAG i put that the class was in-progress. do i need to notify anyone that im withdrawing or just send my transcripts at the end of fall?

Ws are no problem, it’s dropping/failing prereqs that can’t be retaken during the time (eg in the spring semester) that tend to cause issues, but… yea…

@ alanav09

Notify them in late Dec/Jan when the update comes. As long as you didn’t drop a pre-req or required GE class it won’t matter.

Only private schools care about W’s.

Last time I applied to UCSD, white vans showed up at my house at 3am and they demanded to know why I had 2 Ws on my record.

;)

lol jk

Is there an option to get w’s? And why is it so bad?

Some people (some who have worked for UCs, albeit NOT admissions reps!) even have a lot of misconceptions about Ws.

When you take a class, there’s usually 3 drop dates:
1st: The one where you can get your money back
2nd: The one where you might, but they also don’t record that you ever took the class on your transcript
3rd: You can drop, but it will show on your record that you attempted the class. W = withdrawn

Some people think that in some cases, UCs treat Ws as Fs (and as far as I can tell, this isn’t the case. If you have a constant history of getting As littered with Ws that may be a problem, but if the Ws are random and for various reasons there’s nothing to worry about (at all).
