How bad do Cs hurt your chances when applying to top colleges such as HYPSM?

Due to my ignorance, I didn't pay attention to my grades too much this year. I might end up with a C or C+ final grade in my math class (Algebra 2/Pre-Calc). I'm a freshman.

Yeah, when Yale sees your transcript, all classes in which you have received under a B- don’t even appear. Yale just considers them classes that you never took.

The letter C is a myth, but anyways in all seriousness, a C can easily kill a cumulative GPA, but just do well and don’t get another. You will be fine.

I would refrain from listening to those who say that one C will really hurt your application. It’s a problem, but it is one that can be ameliorated by other factors in your application. Princeton and stanford don’t even look at freshman year grades and the other 3 are going to weight it less than your sophomore, junior, and senior year grades (though MIT would probably have a problem with you getting a C in a math class, because just “not paying attention” will not get you a C if you are inherently good at math). Use this as a learning experience and make sure to not get any more Cs.

Jersey 13: Are you sure about the Yale thing, because, won’t it still wind up on the transcript your high school sends? Whether they choose to count it as a class or not, they’ll still see it, correct?

unless your a minority or have killer extracurriculars that C is going to screw you over big time.

its a 3 on an honors scale and a 2 on a regular scale. its a rubbishy grade that will affect your overall gpa greatly. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its the truth.
