How bad is a downward trend

I messed up my junior and sophomore year gradewise. I have a 3.73 unweighted overall, but my freshmen unweighted gpa was a 3.88, sophomore unweighted gpa was a 3.67, junior unweighted gpa was a 3.44, and first semester senior unweighted gpa is a 3.91. I made a mistake and took some really hard classes my junior year but I have never gotten more than one B each year (I got a lot of B+'s my sophomore and junior year). I took 1.5 honors classes my freshmen year, 2 honors classes my sophomore year, 3 honors classes my junior year, and 6 honors classes my senior year. However, even if I weighted my GPA, from my freshmen to junior year, I have a distinct downward trend. This isn’t because I slacked off but rather my non honors classes were way harder than I expected. I have a pretty good standardized test score (34 for ACT) and I go to a pretty competitive high school so my overall GPA isn’t considered “bad”, but I just don’t know if my GPA is competitive with its downward trend.

Some of the competitive schools I am applying to are Dartmouth, Williams, and Johns Hopkins. I want to major in economics and computer science.

I know that grades aren’t everything but will colleges like these dismiss my application because of my downward trend? Thanks in advance.

I don’t know if it will get your application culled right away, but it won’t look good. It’s out of your control now, though, so focus on getting good grades this semester and making sure you have desirable safeties and matches on your list. Best of luck!
