How bad is a W in multivariable calculus?

Okay, where do I start. I’m a computer science major, I used to be some other majors a long time ago, wasn’t a good student(2.44 GPA) part time helped my family when I was in early 20’s, stopped going, came back after 5 years, and since I came back, I’ve been doing well. 3.76 GPA. Came back as a business major, got A’s in calculus 1(summer), calculus 2 and switched to computer science, took physics - mechanics with calculus in winter and got an A

This semester, I decided to take 16 units and I work at least every other weekend. I always have worked except for that one summer when I took calculus 1.

Here is the problem, one of my multivariable calculus exam, I was tired when I was studying, I barely had any sleep on the day of the exam and I couldn’t recognize what my brain did. Not because I didn’t know how to do them, I don’t have trouble in math, and I was making craziest mistakes and I failed my math exam for the first time ever. I need high 90’s from now on to get an A. I’m considering dropping but I’m not giving up.

I’ve been a working student, financially independent so it’s quite annoying although I don’t work a lot.

Since I’ve returned, I’ve had 2 W’s one in English and one in precalculus because I wasn’t getting A’s

I had 3 or 4 W’s in humanities/art etc 10 years ago. I’m 30 currently. But since I came back only counting the classes I took, it’s 3.76 and my total GPA is about 3.5

Is W in multivariable calculus going to be a huge deal for UCLA as a computer science major?

Calculus 1 - A
Calculus 2 - A
Physics(Mechanics) - A

Currently taking

C++ Programming
Java Programming
Multivariable Calculus
Physics - Electricity and Magnetism(The hardest physics)

This semester, having every other weekend, not accessible, fatigue piling up, despite not having much of trouble grasping materials, It’s very tough at the moment and I’m so mad because I thought the math exam wasn’t hard at all I could’ve done so much better and I dunno what the hell my brain was doing. First exam I got a B because I made some mistakes. I was poised to get that A but then I slipped big time.

Is working and studying while majoring in stem hard? help here?

I go to Santa Monica College btw

I’ve already applied as business-econ major last fall and I’m waiting for decisions but then I’m not going, so I’m studying my @$$ off because I want to go into STEM and I’m not doing so bad so far.

I’m so upset because it’s not the material or the difficulty. It’s the other things that get in the way, I’m not 19 anymore, I’ve been a working student, I never took any vacations, When I don’t study I work, when I don’t work I study or when I don’t do either of them, my mind is never at ease because I feel guilty for not doing either although I’m Fn tired as hell a lot of times. I came back in 2014 fall, I always worked, had a job where I had to be at certain times until end of last spring. Didn’t work during summer last year, I work for UberEats and Postmates work on my own time to pay rent and bills and it’s the other things that get in the way NOT the level of difficulty of the material. It’s spring break, I realized I have a bill I have to pay next week so I last saturday I wanted to take a break and didn’t want to study nor work, and realized it on Sunday night and I worked part time on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday while studying a little bit earlier in the afternoon on those days while not being focused. I made enough money to get by, waiting for my fafsa check so I hopefully I won’t have to work rest of the semester, Studied about 9 hours yesterday(Thursday), plan to study 10+ hours today, tomorrow, and Sunday. So I didn’t even really have any breaks. No fun no vacation and I’m just worn out. :frowning: I hate to think that I’m incapable.

Don’t put on yourself too much stress, unless you really have to. I am a math major, and for my third calculus class, I got a B, because of my fault anyway. During that semester, I was taking 4 classes, 16.5 units. For the whole semester, I was thinking that I will get a B for my C++ class, so I studied really hard to boost up my grade. For the math class, I got high As on every single quiz and exam, my percentage was over 95% before the final. During the final week, I studied for other classes much much more than I did for my math class, why? because I only needed a lowest C on the final to get an A for the whole class. I could not make it, sounds crazy right? I GOT A D for the final, the first time ever in my life I failed a test, my 4.0 gpa was gone, I was super desperate, blamed my stupidity, questioned my intended major. And ironically, I got an A for my about-to-be-B C++. My Gpa dropped down to 3.91 but it is still very competitive for my major. So, its all about what major you want to apply to. If you think you can try your best to get an A, and the worst scenario is a B, then don’t drop it. If it is really really hard for you to even get a B, then drop it. A B is somewhat okay, but a C at community college level is really bad.

@andrewjchang I decided to drop calc3 my schedule with calc 3 for the rest of the semester is way too tight and it’s not worth it to risk grades for other classes. I think I have made the right decision to give me some breathing room as well. FML

:frowning: at least I have more time to focus now ugh

Bump

If you withdraw then you must notify the schools you applied to.
You may want to keep it if you think you can get at least C and your GPA for this semester is above 3. W could mean C, D, F.

W’s are far worst than a couple of B’s
