Hi, I'm a freshman and I just finished my first semester. Actually, winter break's almost over and I return to Ann Arbor tomorrow. Yay! Fun!

Anyhow, how bad will a failed class look on my transcript? This was a pass/fail class, a lecture series -- I went to every single goddamn lecture, but three of my attendance slips weren't recorded and I wasn't smart enough to check the grades every week. :( I'm really worried about this... Can anybody please tell me?

It depends on how many credits it was, whether or not it has to do with your intended major, and whether or not you decide to retake it. It being your first semester of freshman year, it undoubtedly will not be as glaring as something in your junior or senior years. A fail in a pass/fail class also, I believe, does not look as bad as a legitimate F in a graded class. It’s obviously not good that you failed a class, but it could be worse and way down the line I don’t think any employer or grad school will be pointing too many fingers at it, especially if you excel from here on out.

I can tell you, I’ve been asked for transcripts before, but I get the feeling no one’s ever actually looked at them. I don’t think it’ll be a big problem.
