How badly does a D in an AP Class hurt?

I am a junior in high school in Virginia. I have made all A's and B's (85% or more) in every class except Chemistry (78/C) in 9th and 10th grade, but this year I am doing terribly in AP Calculus AB. I currently have a 63. Terrible, I know. I hope I can bring it up to a 70 by the end of the year. Math has always been really hard for me, and I've always managed a low B but this year I am getting absolutely screwed by Calculus. I don't know if I'll take the exam for AP Calc or not.

The good news is, I have an A in AP US History and I'm doing okay in AP Euro. I think I can manage an A in five or six of my classes this year and a B in AP Euro, so a bad grade in AP Calc won't hurt my GPA too much (it's currently 3.7)

My question is, will the bad grade individually hurt me too much? I want to go to NC State. My extracurriculars are not too good.

BTW - I would prefer not retaking AP Calculus. I plan to take AP Stats next year instead of BC.

Please help! I'm stressed.

I would say it will hurt pretty badly. Definitely take the AP exam, because if you pass it (3 or above), then that will make up (at least in part) for your low grade in the class. If your not a math person I would suggest AP Stats, as it is pretty easy and involves fairly little math.

You may want to check out kahn_academy, as it can be pretty useful. I used it for AP Physics last year (I had no idea what I was doing lol) and ended up with an 800 and a 5 on the exam.

Good luck!

Obviously a D doesn’t look good and you’ll want to pull that up, but granted you do well on the SATs, you should be fine for NC-State…
