If it was longer maybe I’d cite some more detailed examples, like courses that sound really interesting to me or the specific strengths of the department I’m interested in. But with the 500 character length I’m restricted to mostly vague, general statements. I haven’t visited the campus but Brown is my first choice. What can I talk about in that essay that wouldn’t make it identical to the other 30,000 they’ll get?

Your Why Brown is supposed to talk about your influences and such, no? Well, take that and go with the flow. I alluded to certain courses and juxtaposed them with subjects from the opposite end of the spectrum (but didn’t name them specifically). Basically, I tied in my academic interests slightly in my answer. Leave the strengths in the departments you reference for your other short answer. Unfortunately, the character limit is a real challenge, but try not to fluff up the admissions officer with over-the-top research that you’ve done, as that would be too much overkill. As much of a cliche as it sounds, just be you. If you want to read mine, let me know; I’ll PM is over to you.

By the way, the character limit is 1,000…not 500. =]

Oh you’re right, I was confusing it with another school’s essay.

Sure, I’d love to read yours!

You want me to send u mine too?? It’s important you get it right because it’s a question that your interviewer will ask GUARANTEED. My interviewer asked me to name all the schools I’m applying to, why I was applying to each of them individually, and why Brown is better than all of them (he asked me to cite examples). It was a very HARD interview but gave me positive reassurance at the end :).

Yes please :)

I’m positive interviewers are not supposed to ask where else you are applying.

After several different versions, I went with a ‘Why Brown’ that was kind of goofy, lighthearted, but honest. I had written one that very specifically named reasons, which was fine, but I chose the sort of odd one because it was just more ‘me.’ If you’d like to read it, I’ll PM it to you.

I think the best combination is something that alludes to specific things that Brown offers while getting your personality across. I tried to do that in my essay…as for whether it worked or not, you need to ask someone who read my essay :)

"as for whether it worked or not, you need to ask someone who read my essay " after Dec 10th or 15th.

I think is a “crime” to shorten a good essay to just 500 words, wow! that is hard!

can i have your essays too please? =)

I left creativity to the full-length essays and was just straight-forward with the short answer. I feel that sometimes creativity gets in the way of your message - especially when you only have a very limited amount of space to write. I wouldn’t stress about making it creative - just be sure to have very good reasons for attending.

can those of you that PM you essay also PM it to me please… Im having some trouble making it not generic sounding and an example generally helps me to develop some ideas. thank you.

me three! I’m debating the creativity aspect and to the point kinda deal. anything will help! thanks guys

yeah count me in pls, I jst don’t know how to make it sound less…hm empty, either =.=

thanks a lot :)

I don’t know if this is too much overkill for the posters who asked the OP if he/she wanted to read, but I would also love to see one or two responses to that question. It’s fine if you guys don’t have time, but I’m kind of stuck on how much to mention and what to elaborate.

hii can i read urs too? i need some inspiration to write mine T-T

yeah me four! plz whoever’s still on cc, if u cud send me the why brown essays it’d be greatly appreciated
