How can I raise my Critical Reading score?

I don't get it. I did all the Blue Book tests and lots and lots of practice tests and questions on the CB Website and my highest score in CR is only....540...

I am out of ideas, so if anyone knows a strategy that would help me; please tell me abut it!!!

I am like you. I got a 560. I am trying a new strategy. Read the passage religiously and then answer the questions (or at least 1/2 to 3/4). Results will be shown on this month's SAT's.

only mark an answer u can justify with text... why mark an answer u cant justify?

but are 25 minutes enough to read and understand the passage and answer the questions?

Thanks for the advice, but I have one last Question:
Are 25 mins enough to read the passages and answer all the questions. I tried it the time was barely enough; with all the stress on test day, I don't think that I'll be able to finish on time.
Thanks again.

Yeah, okay,
here's what you do.
you need to open the passage and immediately when she says go, start reading. after speed reading a paragraph or so but with COMPREHENSION, look at the first couple of questions, see if you can answer any . . this way you answer questions while reading the passages . . which means, you keep alert during the passages, and you get the questions answered. I do this and have 6-7 mins left after each CR section, enough time to recheck answers.

GOOD LUCK!

i get 540 on cr ALL THE TIME. its killing me.

i HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. :( :(

sarorah, do the sentence completetion first? So as soon as your proctor say go, do the sentence completion first then read.

The quicker you can do the sentence completion the more time you will have to read the passage.

don't pay too much attention to the passage...look at the answer choices...ETS includes 4 wrong answers...and you need to learn to spot the word or words that makes an answer wrong.

beardofZeus,
if i don't pay attention to the passage then how will i know how to eliminate choices, how will i know what to look for and what not to?

I am not sure if you already aware of some of these, but..

Concentrate on the opinions of the author

Concentrate on the opinions of people whom the author is writing about

DON'T concentrate on the details - don't try to memorize them, don't try to figure out words you don't know, nothing like that - if you get a "detail" question, you can always go back and re-read

DO go back! I actually know some people who don't.

Don't get lost. Keep track of the ideas presented to you - of you are starting to get lost, then go back and re-read - no use in reading further if you don't understand

Underlining really helps, so underline things that look important. OPINION things. CONTROVERSIAL things. not details. Also helps concentrate

Don't use outside knowledge to answer the question. The question absolutely must be backed up by the passage

Don't choose extreme answer choices - some of these have words like only, everyone

This is just a bunch of stuff they taught taught to me in my Kaplan class. I used to score mid-500's and went up to high 600's.

I didn't say ignore the passage. As wroth3try writes, "DON'T concentrate on the details". The line specific questions will force you to do this anyway. The bottom line is that 4 of 5 answer choices must be wrong. Students spend too much time trying to justify why an answer is correct as opposed to - the right way - disproving 4 of the answers. Hopefully the remaining answer is what you had predicted after you read the question. If you want a more complete explanation, send me a private message.

obtain a copy of Grammatix it has REALLY good CR tips

On a passage that's long, tackle the line reference questions first that ask you to define/identify words. When you do this, read a little bit of the passage before and after the referenced line.

You should have most of the passage read by the time you've tackled all line reference. Now, try answering the main idea questions.

Always eliminate the absurd answers straight up. Watch out for phrases like 'not' that change meaning.

Always look for the answer that can be justified by the reading. If the text can't justify an answer, it can't be right.

Improve vocabulary to identify meaning in answer choices.

Read, read, and read more.

I did this, experienced a 120 point increase in CR, and am chillin' in the high 700s.

here's the answer:

you can't.

just kidding. reminding you that cr scores dont go up overnight.
