Hi, this year I applied Emory through RD because Emory was not really my top choice at the tome but the more I looked into the school, it really grew on me. So what can I do to show my interest to the school?
Emory doesn’t track demonstrated interest but it can’t hurt to reach out to your Admissions Officer to introduce yourself. My son was admitted ED and did take the extra steps to visit, attend his high school’s Emory information center and he emailed the Director of Admissions to introduce himself as well his AO. He also had an interview.
You can change your application to ED2. Emory doesn’t consider demonstrated interest, but does consider motivation and ED1 & ED2 show your motivation to attend Emory. Is there a reason you would not change your application to ED2?
Okay, I see your circumstances. You applied EA to Boston College and got deferred. You could not have applied to BC EA and Emory ED1 because that’s not allowed. Now that you are deferred from BC, you are free to apply to Emory ED2. You have 11 days to change your application to ED2 from RD and it would help your chances a great deal.
@ljberkow I was not sure id ED was going to discourage my chances for FA because I probably can not attend without them. If I changed my mind, how can I change to EDII?
Strong way to show interest is in the Why Us, how you match what they look for. It’s still, “Show, not just tell.” And the rest of the app/supp. It’s not just visiting. And now’s a busy time; just introducing yourself in an email isn’t it. They know who applied.
If you need to compare FA you should think hard before applying EDII. At the very least run the net price calculator to get an idea of your FA package. If it’s not strong enough, don’t apply EDII.
@eastcoast101 how accurate is the net price calculator? Im planning to use this one:

@choijiwon526 If you don’t get the aid the net price calculator gives you, you can under those circumstances back out of ED2 commitment. Emory is pretty generous on financial aid (not so generous on merit aid - and that’s another debate). In any case, you can call admissions on that one, but I think you can change your application and increase your chances greatly. Good luck in whatever direction you take.
Emory is very generous with Financial Aid and applying ED2 will not change what they will give you. If the FA comes out to not be doable for your family you can back out of the ED agreement. I can tell you in our case the FA was very favorable and more so than the NPC showed.
@ljberkow BC’s Early Action is not restrictive. They prefer that applicants who have applied ED somewhere else not apply EA to BC but do not prohibit it.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I will think this through and decide
Interesting, maybe BC was different last year on the EA policy. We looked at it then it was restricted EA. It must have changed. In any case, good luck with your decision.
Yes you can back out of ED if FA isn’t sufficient, but if the NPC says you can afford to pay $25,000/year and you/your family feels comfortable at $10,000/year, it’s unlikely it’s going to work. If you get a figure the NPC you’re comfortable with, and they don’t come through with that, you can appeal. See if there is a difference between what they think you can afford and what you think you can afford.
