I have looked all over the internet for practice tests / for the PSAT / for 9th graders, and I could’t find anything. On my last PSAT, which I took around November, I forgot what score I got but I was in the 95 percentile which is good but I want to reach 99 percentile. Anyone have websites or books I can look at to study for my next PSAT in 9th grade? Thanks.
Why?
Sounds like you are a bright and talented kid. Why invest your free time, energy, and talents on something as trivial as a test score?
Find a problem in your community that needs solving, a subject area about which you want to develop real expertise, a talent (other than test taking) that you want to develop, or a dream project that you find inspiring! They will be far better uses of your time and effort.
I haven’t seen any prep books even for the PSAT, let alone the 8/9 version, which I’m assuming is the one you’re taking. The general advice I’ve seen is to just prep for the SAT since the 2 tests are very similar, but I don’t know if that applies to the PSAT 8/9, since I’ve never taken it.
If you’re following the normal-ish course progression for an 8th grader, your score is probably going to go up each year until your junior year even if you do nothing, simply because you’re going to learn more material that’s being tested on the SAT.
Either way, there’s really no reason you should study for this test, since a) it doesn’t count for anything, and b) you could probably find better things to do with your time, since like @CaliMex said, you clearly seem to be a pretty bright and talented kid.
Side Note: Also, you’re probably going to spend a ton of time in your junior, senior, and maybe even your sophomore year on this test, so why waste time studying for it now? This thing is going to haunt you for half of high school, enjoy not seeing it now while you still can
Take a deep breath! You’re in 8th grade; relax. Trust me, it’s good to be proactive but you don’t want to burn out and just enjoy the rest of middle school while you can. It’ll be over before you know it
If you really, really want to prep for it, which I agree with the above isn’t a valuable use of your time, just use SAT study guides.
The entire suite of tests - PSAT 8/9/10/NMSQT/SAT - are all similarly structured with increasingly difficult questions. The easy and mid questions on an SAT are probably similar to what you’ll see, and working on harder problems makes actual tests feel easier.
But really, focusing on math classes, English classes, reading, other school work, is the best way now to prepare for testing years down the road. You can test prep then.
Fwiw, my D took the SAT in 7th and 8th and the PSAT in 10th without anything more than an official practice test in 7th and 10th to understand the format and mechanics. From the diagnostics of those tests, she’ll prep this summer for the actual PSAT/NMSQT and SAT this fall/next Spring. I didn’t feel any earlier prep was of value. High scores before the actual SAT don’t really count for anything, with the exception of the PSAT in 11th only, and only if you qualify for NMS.
