How can people be taken off the wait-list already?

Isn't it too early? Wouldn't it defeat the whole purpose it the colleges start taking people before they have received a reply from those admitted initially?

the deadline is may 1st, some people simply tell duke that they don't want to attend earlier opening up space.

I know that, but technically, they can't review the applications until the number of rejections form the applicants become sol large that it takes the number of applicants accepted below the projected class size.

I've heard other schools have done this as well this year.

Yup, I know for sure that Rice started taking people off the waitlist even earlier. Yields will be a bit low for a lot of schools this year, because of an increase in cross-applications.

Lafayette and Cornell started taking people off waitlists as well
