Rice Wait List

For those who got accepted off the wait list in recent previous years, when you hear from Rice? Before May 1? After May 1?

I’m on the waitlist this year, but I know that we won’t hear anything until after May 1st. May 1st is the date by which all accepted students have to accept admission or not. Rice won’t know if they have any open spots from the 950 until that date.

The waitlist is very hard to predict from year to year; honestly, it’s probably best to put it out of your mind. When I was accepted off the waitlist it happened via a phone call in early June, but I know it happened in waves, with some other people getting accepted earlier.

How many people will get off the wait list this year you think? And I thought it wouldn’t be after may 1, but I saw some people a couple years back post they found out around April 24…

Maybe once enough people formally reject Rice’s offer of admission they start to feel out the “strongest” waitlisted people to see if they still want to come? Dunno, sounds weird that people were finding out before May 1st…

Rice took 40 people off the waitlist last year I think. The number should be somewhat similar this year, although it could very well be 0 like it was a few years ago. Good luck to you guys

Hopefully it is enough. How many people usually accept the spot on the wait list?

Crossing our fingers …

As soon as people are notified from the wait list, please post something here so others can see they started accepting people off the wait list.

Bumpity bumpity bumpity bump

I talked with an admissions officer and she said they’re definitely not going to start looking at the waitlist until May 1. so any decisions probably won’t be happening for a while…

Aw, thanks for checking. I was looking at the Rice website and it is my understanding that they will not be closing the waitlist until July 1st. So, we could be in for a long wait.

I’m guessing they will start accepting people from the wait list in the next week or two, if they need to even accept anyone. It will go in waves also.

Anyone hear anything yet?

Nope. Pretty eagerly waiting and hoping, just like you, though. At the latest, they said we’d hear from them at the end of May, right? Not much to do except sit here and pointlessly feel stressed about it each day. That’s what I’m doing, at least.

If you are the waiting list, you may receive an email like the following:

Dear XXXXX,

The month of April was, no doubt, a whirlwind of activity toward finalizing
your college plans. We are pleased that you accepted our offer of a place on
Rice’s waiting list. As we assess where we stand with the Class of 201X, we
wanted to hear more from you on where you currently stand. Please respond to
this email by checking one of the options below.

_____ Rice remains my top choice and if you offer me a place in the class, I
will definitely enroll.

_____ I am still very interested in Rice and I would seriously consider
enrolling if a place in the class were offered to me. Please keep my file
active on your waiting list.

_____ Please withdraw my name from the wait list.

If you choose to remain on the wait list, rest assured that our wait list
selections are need-blind and need-based financial aid is available for all who
qualify. All merit-based aid has been expended. However, if you are a
National Merit Finalist and you listed Rice as your first choice, you would be
eligible for one of these awards as long as you haven’t already been awarded a
scholarship from another source.

Please respond this email (riceapps@rice.edu) by XXXX XX, 20XX.

=========================

Always select the first option. Your objective is get the offer of admission. You can decide whether you want to enroll after you receive the offer. Choosing the first option does not commit you to attending Rice.

If you choose the second or third option, Rice will place you lower on the waiting list after applicants that select the first option.

m1817 - Did you recently get an email like the one you posted?

The letter is from a previous admissions cycle.

Looks like Notee Dame is not going to its waitlist this year. It makes me wonder about Rice. Heavy sigh.

Not to be a downer but May 9 seems a bit late to start accepting students…
Has anyone heard anything from their admissions counselors?

I guess a call could be made to Rice.
