hey everyone, i’m shaking right now.
i just got my unofficial transcript back from this year, and i have a cumulative GPA of 3.8.
last year, my cumulative was a 3.9
this year, all my classes were 4.0’s (above a 94.5) with one 3.9 (i got a 94.1 in the class). my core classes averaged out to be a 96 – this 96 does not include my elective classes, which i have 96+'s in. that should be a 4.0 (94.5+/100) for this year.
how is it possible that i have a 3.8? i know this might seem really insignificant, but i worked my heck off this year to get a 4.0 cumulative GPA that i’m really, really upset and really, really frustrated.
i’ve already contacted my counselor, and she said my request was sent to the registrar, but i’m so paranoid that this isn’t an error for some reason, and that a 3.8 is my real gpa. i know this is so so so so irrational and so so so so insignificant but i’m just so pissed. again, i killed myself to get a 4.0 cumulative this year and i have a 3.8.
the only thing that i can think of that MIGHT make this NOT an error are my stagecraft electives in fall and spring. stagecraft is a P/F (pass or fail) class, but somehow i have a 4.0 put in for the fall semester and a P put in for the spring semester. i feel like this shouldn’t affect it at all but i’m so paranoid. could this be it??? and how common are transcript errors really?
Are you able to show all your grades so that we can do calculations on it? It does seem weird that one A- can make your GPA go from 3.9 to 3.8 unless you’ve taken very few classes.
Very possible there is an error. Grades are manually entered and people are human and can make errors.
That said, how does your school calculate your cumulative GPA? I ask because my daughter’s HS reports grades by quarters to students but the cumulative GPA is based on semesters which includes final exams. Sometimes students are surprised to see the cumulative GPA go down after exams are entered since they can be such a big part of the grade.

maybe i can pm it? it’s an imgur link by the way!
@momofsenior1 maybe, but all my exams were 95+ this year! which make the benchmark 94.5+. french - 96, math - 98, chemistry - 100, global - 99, english - 95
Then assume it’s an error OP. Don’t freak out unnecessarily. You’ve already called your GC and now it’s being looked into. Take a deep breath and try to relax.
When you convert a 100 point to a 4 point scale, you first convert the 100 point grade to a letter grade, then find the points (4 point scale)for each letter grade and take the average. You don’t average the 100 point grades and convert that. Also, I have never seen a letter grade point value of 3.9. Normally an A- is 3.7 or 3.67.
Are your individual class grades correct on your transcript? That is usually where the error is if there is one. The cumulative GPA is a simple calculation. Even a MIT CS grad can get it right.
@eeyore123 yeah, my individual classes are correct – and our school for some reason grades individual classes on a 4.0 scale on the transcript, but they do give out grades out of 100. the lowest class grade i got this year was a 94.1/100, or a 3.9 for that class on my transcript… i’ve never encountered any grading errors like this before, so i’m reaaaaallllllyyyyy anxious and paranoid…
Although possible, if your individual grades are correct, it is unlikely that your cumulative GPA is incorrect. That would be a programming error that would impact many students. It is more likely that you are missing something about the way your school calculates its GPA.
Errors are normally data entry errors. You have stated this isn’t the issue.
My goodness…please relax a bit. You will have time in the fall to sit down with your guidance counselor and go over the GPA calculation. Either it is correct and you will understand why or a mistake has been made and it will be fixed.
@eeyore123 oh man. i hope to god it’s the opposite, haha @happy1 aaaaaa yeah. the better way of handling this situation would just to be patient, but my anxiety is getting the best of me. hopefully this situation gets a solution soon.
thanks for the replies! :^)
