How competitive are the UC's for out-of-state applicants?

Well, thats the questions.

UC-Berkeley
UC- Davis
UC- San Diego
UC- Santa Barbara
UC- LA

Would i have a chance at any of these....
in case you want to know my basic stats

public high school in MO
top 10 percent of class (31/475)
GPA weighted: 4.17
GPA unweighted: 3.94
Current/Last Semester GPA: 4.428
ACT: 28 (hoping to raise soon)
w/ Writing: 9
SAT 2:

Varsity TEnnis- Captain, MVP.
Summer Scholars program at Wash U this summer.

UC-Berkeley Impossible
UC- Davis Very difficult
UC- San Diego Basically impossible
UC- Santa Barbara Very difficult
UC- LA Impossible

You MIGHT be able to get into one, but you’ll be rejected by Cal and UCLA.

SD is not impossible.

Right, it’s basically impossible.

Sorry but I highly doubt you’ll be accepted, as Californians are often rejected at UCLA/Berkeley with those stats and for others I’m really not sure but seems hard still (but your descriptions of your profile are pretty limited so something significant may be left out, who knows…I still suggest you apply to some of those schools and see…IF you’re financially able)

You’re gonna need at least a 33+ on the ACT to have any chance at UCLA or Berkeley.

To get into Cal/UCLA, on most occasions, one needs Ivy League caliber stats. It’s possible.

That’s an exaggeration. It is hard for out-of-staters to get in, and there are eight different Ivy League colleges, but that overstates the case a bit.

Seriously people overrate the difficulty of getting into them. UCLAs admit rate is 28% for OOSer. Sure the pool is more self selective but for the majority of top applicants it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to appy to go to a state school when other schools will be cheaper/offer much better money.

man, thats really weird…

for in state students, i know some one who got into Santa Barbara, with only a 3.7 GPA, 24 ACT…and mediocre stats…(not in top 10 percent)

I wish I lived in cali haha.

Don’t give up, man. Just focus on raising your scores, writing good essays, presenting yourself, and stuff… (your GPA is good enough already)

I seriously don’t think you’re already rejected at UCLA/Berkeley before you even apply; so why not try (unless you’re financially unable)

UC Santa Barbara is considered a safety school for those in the Santa Barbara area.

Source: friend who lives in Santa Barbara, who is applying there because its considered a “party school.”

I wouldn’t say that UCSD is terribly difficult to get into OOS, but it isn’t easy. Berkeley is probably the hardest and often requires being Ivy-caliber. UCLA is hard, but not quite as hard. (In fact, its CDS says that in-state status isn’t considered, oddly enough, whereas Berkeley’s rates it “very important,” on par with GPA, rigor of course load, and essays.)

Interesting…

i would say for ucb you def need ivy league stats since it is hard enough to get in in state. however, i have heard wierd stories of people being accepted to ucla both in and out of state with horrible stats but good ECs. i got into ucsd oos, i was aiming for ucb and ucla but now that i look back, i am lucky to have gotten into ucsd out of state. any of the UCs are a good place to get your education and are respected all over the country so even if you dont get into ucb or ucla it is not the end of the world, it is a lot to pay oos for a uc, but if being in california is important to you then it may be worth it. dont get too hung up on ucb, it is pretty impossible, and this is coming from someone who was OBSESSED with ucb!
i had a 2200 and like 3.7/4.3 and for SAT2 i had 790, 650, 670
my grades werent amazingg but i had a ton of science related ECs and my essays focused on CA and i guess i showed interest in one area
i really dont know how hard ucsd is oos, maybe i got lucky?
so to the people who said it isnt that hard to get in and the people who said it is impossible, any comments based on my stats? im kind of curious now…
thanks

I had a similar GPA as you and a 30 ACT and I got into UCLA (in-state) and spring semester for Berkeley. So definitely raise the ACT.

i think its fair that its easier for californians to get into ucs because we pay for it.

^^ that isn’t to say, though, that all of the UCs are “easy” to get into for in-staters, on an absolute scale.

Check out statfinder (google it) and compare in-state and in-state + out-of-state stats.
