How competitive is the Chemical Engineering major?

I was accepted into the College of Engineering as a Chemical Engineering major. Just wondering if anyone knows the stats on how difficult it is to get into this major.

@jefgreen, what’s your stats, if you don’t mind me asking? S didn’t get into College of Engineering, he was accepted into “Exploration” program instead. I’m trying to figure out cut off GPA / SAT scores.

@Dad4Engineering:

Well, I transferred from another college with 60+ credits; so, I wasn’t required to send my SATs or HS transcript in. My GPA from my previous college was 3.81.

@Dad4Engineering:

What were your son’s statistics?

SATI 2090 (600 CR, 750M, 740W)
SATII 770M2, 720Ph (not sure if they even considered these)
GPA 3.59 (slight drop in senior year, used to be 3.62)

If I had to guess, it might be that the GPA cutoff is so high. Did he apply for Chemical Engineering as well?

I’m not sure what your question is. The competition is to get IN to the major from premajor or into engineering from arts and sciences. Since you are in the major, you are competing with yourself to graduate on time. The cutoff for Chemical is usually around 3.2 after 3 full time semesters.

My question is: How difficult is it to get into the OSU College of Engineering, if you are applying as a ChemE major.

They are two seperate applications. Getting into College of Engineering is not overly competitive. They look at class rank, math act, and highschool gpa for incoming freshmen. You can apply to the college as a current or transfer student with a GPA around 3.0. After taking prereqs, you can apply to ChemE, a department in the college. This is a competitive process they may include an interview, but it usually just involves taking all required classes and maintaining a 3.2ish GPA. The cutoff can change every year.
