I'm still deciding if going to UCLA is the right decision because from what I've heard, the communications program is really hard to get into and I'm worried I'll end up studying some major I don't want to go into... anybody know any stats or is in the program right now? Thanks!

Super difficult to get into. Its one of the most selective for both transfers and freshman-admitted students. Its one of LAs few "super-impacted" majors. ug.

The only stats I have are for transfers. Essentially, about 500 apply each year and out of those, only about 230 have over the 3.5 minimum gpa needed. From there, they choose (fairly arbitrarily, from what i hear) about 70-80. It works out to be about 35%.

For freshman admits its difficult but I dont think its anywhere near as impacted as it is for transfers.

Im currently a comm transfer, anxiously waiting for May. Its rough.

just curious...what do u intend on doing for a future career? i want to go into comm but im not really sure what kind of career options i have...and if i dont get into that am i just screwed...

i heard communications was a joke major, but i'm guessing thta that's not the case at ucla. does the location make it easier to find internships? how does ucla's communications compare to that of other schools?

what i've heard is that it's really hard to get in, but the program itself once you're in it isn't as hard. nevertheless, since it's impacted, that normally means it's one of the best programs at ucla. i've seen some of the fliers that the comm department has and for career options, there's a ton of them and the comm major is very versatile.

Im not exactly sure about what I want to do after school. All of my experience at community college has been in magazine publishing, and its kind of what made me decide on the major. However Im interested in kinda seeing whats out there, and LAs program is great for that. Since its not super specialized and is mostly theoretical, theres a lot of room for figuring out specific career stuff afterwards. I figure that Ill decide through internships and hopefully after grad school will have some options.

Yes, UCLA's location is definitely helpful when you're a comm major and is partially why LA is my first choice. You're simply going to have a lot more opportunities (for jobs, internships, and just meeting people) there than you would at maybe SD or SB (other schools I applied to).

About the joke major thing...blah. I dont know. Yeah, its not rocket science. I dont think anyone in the program would complain that it's super difficult. But its what Im interested in and its something I have a background in and so whatever. It was never really a question for me. Like, I was never going to be a business major just cuz I thought it would be more prestigious or I would be respected more for it. There are a lot of opinions about comm students not being smart or wasting money for a useless degree, but I disagree. Just because I have more interest in editorial work over biology doesn't mean I shouldn't go to school, yknow?

Kfc4u- You're definitely right about it being really hard to get into and maybe not so hard once you're there. It's impacted because its so popular and the department itself just doesn't have the space. But the classes (on paper, at least) seem really interesting and fun. Im excited about it.

As far as communications go though, LA is definitely the best choice within the UC system and I would argue one of the best programs in the state. Top distinction usually jumps from LA to USC alternately depending on the year.

Sorry for the novel, kids. I'm a communications major. I generally have a lot to say. Like, all the time.

allie- thanks a lot :)

sorry another Q..i know u cant put down Comm major until junior year, so for now i have undeclared humanities cause i didnt know what i was supposed to do...what ARE u supposed to do??? and for the kids who dont get in....what do they end up doing?

yeah...if u can't declare a major until junior year what are you supposed to put down? is it better to go undeclared, or declare something else and then switch if you're accepted?

do you know if it's possible to double major in biz-econ and communications?

Sorry for lagging. Magazine is on deadline and stuff. Havent had time to come on or even to stress about the fact that admissions are like..next week. eeek.

But eh. Not sure about the double major thing. Both are super impacted. I know for programs like psych that if its not the first major you apply to, you cant come back later to change or for a double. Im not sure if bus econ and comm have the same rules, but since theyre even more impacted than psychology, i wouldnt be surprised.

Im not as clear about declaring for freshman admits, but my best guess is to go undeclared until its time to petition for Comm. Kids who dont get in end up having to settle with something else. Its pretty brutal. (but, at least theyre in the school. for transfers, if we dont get into the major, thats the only shot for the whole school).
