How competitive?

I’ve heard that Miami is a good place to study Musical Theatre, but exactly how competitive is admission in comparison to top schools such as Michigan or Penn State?

Well I believe they only accept 8 students total so I would say very competitive. Hopefully someone else that knows more about this program will chime in. My D took it off her list cause she didn’t like the facilities.

I am going to be a freshman in the MT program at UMiami this fall. Obviously things fluctuate by year, but this year I was told they auditioned over 500 and accepted 8 boys and 8 girls. Lulu63 is right though in that the facilities aren’t the best (to put it kindly). The program is pretty strapped for cash, but it seemed good, anyway. After all, whether or not your college had good facilities has pretty much nothing to do with whether or not you will make it in the real world. But still, I can understand why that would make Miami less attractive. The faculty all seemed great, though. When I was there, I met faculty that had left many “1st tier” places such as UCLA, Boston Conservatory, and Carnegie Mellon to work at the program in Miami.

I was told by one of the people who works in the office for musical theatre that 256 auditioned last year and 18 get in though only half of that is for musical theatre. Obviously in the sense that they only take 8-9 people it is competitive, but compared to other schools such as Michigan it is easier to get into (Michigan has 2,000 audition and only accepts 21).
