How detrimental are B+'s and A-'s in non prerequisite classes?

For example, this semester I currently have a 94 % in my organic chemistry 2 class after 2 exams but in some classes that aren't prerequisites, like medical anthropology, I have a 89% and a 92% in my Research Methods Class. I'm honestly having a harder time with these classes than organic chemistry! Like my medical anthropology has options like:

A) Blah
B) Blah
C) Blah
D) A and C
E) A and B
F) B and C
G) A, B, C
H) None of the above

for almost every question and I'm the only person in the class who isn't an anthropology graduate student. I regret taking it but how bad would a B+ in a non prerequisite like this look because it has "medical" it its name?

Your overall GPA and your GPA in the pre-reqs matters. I don’t think what you are talking about is a big deal.

A B+ looks worse than an A- but better than a B.
An A- looks worse than an A but better than a B+.

All classes are included in calculation of overall GPA. D’s GPA got lowered to 3.98 because of 3 A-'s in her MINORS. Considering the fact that cut for Summa Cum Laude (which has NO effect on Med. School acceptance) was 3.96 in her department, few more A-'s could have lowered her status to Magna. It was never discussed though as D. has fully enjoyed her minors and just tried to do her best which sometime was not enough to get an A. My advice is to fully enjoy your UG, forget about B+, A-…etc. At the end, you will understand what I mean. There is NOT much time for “outside” things at Med. School, no free summer either. Enjoy while it lasts, have great time, be a bit “risky”, it is worth it.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks “falling” from a 4.0 to 3.98 to be risky! It sounds like your kiddo has her head on straight and is a fantastic student–I’m sure you’re proud of her!

^It was “risky” for those who aimed for Summa Cum Laude, which never was D’s goal, it just happened. However, D. has mentioned that many parents of students in her departement actually protested very loudly after dicovering that cut in her department was 3.96 while it was much lower in other departments in the same school. The reason - the highest number of pre-meds in D’s major. Parents were upset that 3.95 did not get “Summa” on their diploma while lower grades at other departments got it. We did not care one way or another because it did not matter for Med. School application. Yes, we were proud of her and still are just like other parents are proud of their kids, no matter what the grades are…or other accomplishments.
