I think mine went very well.

16 hours, B/B+ in 4 of them, A's in the other for 60 points/16 hours = 3.75 gpa

Socially, I've made a few connections that I see as long-lasting...

Your thoughts??

20 Credits, 3.7-3.8 GPA

I have good friends and I know what I want to double-major in and my university is going to the Rose Bowl.

That's really all I need. I had a good first semester.

Academically: 16 Creds, I won't know my GPA until close to Christmas, I already know I have 1 DEFINATE A. As for the others...B's would be a lucky pull off.

Socially: Forget it. It's not even worth thinking about. Very disappointed. :(

I felt good about my first semester socially (and football-wise ;))

Academically, 2 of my classes I'm expecting good grades. But 2 of my others, I'm not. Their final exams were horrible.

Chem finals killed me...I went from a 3.8 to like a 3.2 in the matter of a few days. But I have lots of friends and am having fun.

"(and football-wise ;))"

Darn right redski. :)

Academically? Wonderful.
Socially? Nah not really. Happiness comes within anyhow, not through other people.

The first semester of my 2005-2006 academic year:

Only 12 credit hours:

Marketing: A-
Management Accounting: A
Microecon: A

What's that? a 3.8?... keeps my cummulative at 3.9 with two semesters to go....until I walk!!!! Senioritis is starting to kick in.

Social life: Halloween was an experience, basketball games are fun, not looking to get with any ladies, seriously, so...I can't really complain...it's coo.

AHH! I need advice on how bad this is....

Freshman Cornell University
Multivariable Calc: C-
Honor's Mechanics: B+
Computer Science 100: A
Writing Seminar: Between B and A.
Concepts of Modern Physics: Pass (it's pass/fail)

Just wondering if these grades are really going to hurt me later. i.e. REU, grad school, scholarships, etc.

Thanks

One freshman semester, in fact your entire freshman year, shouldn't hurt you for Grad school. the other two, I don't know?

I'm at Umich, and right now i'm looking at somewhere in the 3.6 to 3.7 range, which I'm happy with. It's been a LONG couple of weeks, and there's more to go, but overall it's been fairly manageable.

Socially, I've had some fun. Still single right now, but I'm looking, and I've made some good connections with people. The party scene's pretty decent, once you get the feel for it. So far only 1.5 drunken hook=ups, long story about the .5 that i don't need to elaborate on.

I feel awkward putting this down, but I'm not trying to brag and I feel I deserve it since I was sick the first two weeks of the term (intestinal virus, lost 15 pounds-- really fun stuff) and still came through.
Freshman, 18 credits
Chem: A+; Chem Lab: A; Honors History: A-; Honors Literature: A; Psych: A+

Best wishes to everyone next term/semester. Study hard!

Am I the only one who feels kind of sad reading a long list of people talking about how the academics of the semester went and mentioning only GPAs and nothing about good profs or classes where they learned a lot or cool projects?

And, for the record (although I'm a sophomore so it's not my first semester) this is what I believe I got out of the classes I took this semester.

Genetics: I learned that this is probably an area that I would like to do research in. I learned a lot about genetics (duh), and also got to create a learning module based on the evolution of human sex chromosomes. Thinking about how to teach a concept helps me learn it better myself, so that project was cool and useful if time consuming.

Immunology: Each student gave informal presentations each day based on a part of the reading from the night before. I way more used to giving presentations, so that was helpful. I also read 60 primary liturature articles for my paper and presentation on Ebola virus, which made me a lot faster at reading technical papers.

Thermodynamics: I'm working on a final paper on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. It's cool stuff, and it's helping me get better at examining cycles and using software for cycle analysis.

Matsci: My group studied surfboards. We synthesized our own polyurethane foam, performed mechanical tests on lots of foam samples, and explored the use of microemulsion in foam. We also got trained on the scanning electron microscope, which is pretty much the coolest thing ever.

beck86nj, I'm a parent and I felt sad, too. Good for you, I'm glad your learning so much--good luck for your future!

I was pleasantly surprised with my first semester (ever) at the University of NH. I'm truly happy there, which was the most important thing to me for my first semester. I'm making friends, I was very happy with my classes, hockey and football games were a blast, and I learned how to manage my time more effectively. Learned how to take care of myself too, since I was sick half the semester
Grades were MUCH better than I expected. I'm looking at an A- in the class I hated, A's in two of my other classes, and unless I completely blow my sociology final, I should be ok in that class too. Actually I can get a zero on it and still have a 70 in the class. If I do well on it, I should pull an A- or an A in there.
And I am really looking forward to going back in a little over a month. I think that that speaks volumes about how my semester went.

First semester of my 4th year in college...lol
Academics? Pretty good compared to my last couple of years! I'm enjoying my courses a lot more and a lot more motivated to study. So all good then :)
Socially... I'm away from a lot of my friends in terms of classes... most of them are going to be graduating this year so working on final year projects and all of that...and doing the whole getting to know people thing again is hard. But I still see my old friends nearly all the time, and I get to see my BF nearly every day (he's a CS major too, in another college 4 miles from mine) so that's good. :)

I guess my first semester could have been worse, but I'm not sure how

I failed freshman composition... but I got a solid A in my honors literature course.

further explanation:
English - cut and dry, taught from the book, stock research paper topics that interested me in no way whatsoever
human event - amazing discussions on the readings, tied into current issues, difficult but engaging topics

so yeah. I can retake the class next semester, and because it's lower division, the bad grade will get deleted from my GPA.
I'm not looking at grad school so I'm not stressing about it.

this semester has been a learning experience in many ways.

Well, I got a C in my problem course...but completely deserved.

I also think I completely bombed the final for one of my major courses, though I had an A- in the course, I think i'll be getting a B at this point.

Italian and French I know are As.

My History course...I am not really sure about it...I will get an A for sure if I aced the final, but I don't think I did....so I may get a B.

So this has actually been my worst semester.....may I have many more! :-)
