So, I filled out part 1 (general information) of the UMD application, gave the rec forms to my teachers, and had that part in (and paid) by Nov. 1. Later, I decided not to apply, so I never filled out part 2 (essays and EC's). Today, I got a letter in the mail saying that I had been accepted to the Spring Semester 2010.

I am really confused. Does UMD do this often? Did no one apply this year, so they're accepting half-finished applications? Has this happened to anyone else?

im sure they had more than enough applicants. i found out that i got in probably a month after everyone else and they placed me in the wrong college. when i called them, they said that they “probably didnt give part 2 a thorough reading” and they must have misread my intended major or something (all of my essays were about how i wanted to do engineering). id assume if your above a certain point with gpa and test scores, there really isnt a point in looking through the rest of your app, maybe in there eyes. just a guess.

I don’t know what to say to this. (This is nothing at all against you or your application psycheycho) You mean to tell me that I worked for hours constructing that entire application (the longest and most comprehensive out of all that I did) to the tee, making sure that all of my essays and activities and details etc. were absolutely perfect (being that UMCP was my 1st choice school) and hung on until April first only to get rejected? When I have classmates whose applications I know were not nearly as solid and well-founded as mine, not to mention lacked the same test scores and list of extracurriculars that I did who were accepted? Maryland has a failed admissions office that can’t seem to work with any type of consistency… I just can’t seem to understand how an incomplete app can get a spring admission when the full one I sent in gets nothing?

wow i knew MD didnt read every single thing on our applications…
everyone says that “yes they do read everything and every word of your essay” …bull****
yh the MD admissions process has been reaallly screwed up with financial aid (stingy!), acceptances, and acceptnces into programs…shame shame shame

well - i filled out every single part of my application and have yet to hear any response from them at all. so i have no clue whether I’m accepted or not.

This happens at many large universities, our DS did the same for NYU and he got accepted also, even though he never officially submitted Part 2 of his ap.

Not surprised. It was clear from Towson’s letter that all they look at are GPA and test scores. It’s a waste of time to submit anything else. I assume it’s like this at all large state u’s (not the smaller ones).

Based on my experience with a number of very large state universities UMD has the worst admissions office/process in the country bar none.
I’m ashamed to say I come form Md…
