Schools that you knew would be difficult to get into with your stats, but still applied anyway?

Any stories of success

I kept my reaches reasonable, didn't apply to HYPS) and got into them.

Lots at my school this year were not as fortunate. Kids who my school's scattergrams show would have gotten in 2 years ago didn't. Schools like Chicago rejected lots of kids who looked like solid matches. The ivies were just bloody, rejecting even qualified legacies.

It's cold out there!

My son only applied to "slight" reaches (bottom 25% in stats) and got in, but didn't get into his safety.

Brown was a reach for me, and I got in, surprisingly to me (I am a legacy, but still, I didn't realize it could help that much, and many people applied at my school, many already got in early, and some with better stats than me didn't get in). Otherwise, the best I did other reaches was waitlisted, if that.

My reaches were UChicago, Brandeis, W&M (OOS), and Georgetown. I got into UChicago and Brandeis, waitlisted at W&M, and rejected at Georgetown.

Got into one reach (Brown) and rejected by the other (Northwestern). But I'm very happy w/ the results.

My reaches were Tufts, Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth, UC Berkeley (OOS), and Brandeis (kind of).

Got into Cal spring semester, Dartmouth (where I'll be attending), and Brandeis (which gave me a very generous scholarship). Flat out rejected by Tufts, Cornell, and Yale, but Dartmouth was my first choice anyway, so I'm happy. :P

Got into my reach: Bowdoin. I think it was my EC's--theatre and music. I am ecstatic! Interestingly, a kid in my school with higher scores (2300) did not get in, or into any ivies, I think cause she just looked like everyone else--great scores, grades, AP's, the usual student govt. and community service, but no clear passion or road... (She's ending up at Wash U in st louis, nothing to be ashamed about!--but she is a legacy there).

Cornell: Deferred then accepted and going next fall
CMU: Wait listed, but it was basically a rejection since they only offered me a wait list in a different major. I didn't accept a spot on it.
