I can't believe it...2190 SAT, subpar subject tests, no hooks...

AND I GOT INTO COLUMBIA, PRINCETON, AND YALE!

6 for 6 (Rutgers, Pitt, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Princeton, Yale)!!!

gratz 10char

This just shows you that CC inflates the "requirements" for getting admitted to Ivy League. Congrats!

wow, congrats.

Yes, same here!
Stanford and Pomona, with a 2160...I was pretty shocked...

That's amazing libra! What were the rest of your stats like?

what are the rest of your stats!?
haha this gives me hope

10 for 10 schools (including WashU, Duke, Hopkins, and UNC oos).

Eng. Lang. AP - 5
US History AP - 3
Chemistry AP - 3

My EC's aren't very numerous, but the few in which I did participate were clearly huge time investments. I think it's better to list 4 or 5 EC's you had a big role in than listing every little thing. I included no additional info.

I have no familial ties to any of these schools, I applied for financial aid (my gosh, I'd only have to pay $3,000/yr for Yale and Princeton, score!)

My essays were what put me over the top I think. I laid bare my soul on paper for each one. Otherwise, I guess they just take some odd pleasure in admitting people with lower than average stats.

Congratulations! As a transfer applicant, I got into 4 of my 5 reaches (WashU, Rice, Northwestern, Emory) too with below average stats. I'm now getting a 3.9 GPA at Northwestern, which puts me at the top of the student body. I'm also Asian (mostly) and male.

Do you belong to any special categories? If so, you might want to point them out so as not to give others false hope.

I am 10-0 including yale, williams, amherst, swarthmore and wesleyan. the only school i have yet to hear from is the college of new jersey whichwas my uber safety lol.

i got into cornell with sat below the 50 percentile and no leadership positions! wooooo

Congrats libra! Could you share some essay strategies with us?

I'm the opposite of that :(

For essay strategies, I'd say to be as specific and direct as possible. Grandiose, poetically eloquent language may go over well in a writing exam, but remember that you're trying to strike an emotional chord with the person reading your essay. Be as personal and honest as you are with your friends - these admissions people probably throw every essay that starts off with "Ever since I was a child"... or "What I am most interested in studying is..." etc etc. Don't be a robot - be a person.

In terms of other advice, I'd say again to choose unique EC's that show who you are and what your interests are - if you can convey what your interests are through your EC's, then you can utilize your essay to a more creative and personal end.

Congrats emtheros, Johnson181, sgtpepper08, and as for Milkmagn - don't be discouraged. Going to ANY college is a feat in and of itself considering the state of secondary education today, and success is achieved by what you do, not where you go :)

any chance you'd pm me your essays so i can read them for my own pleasure? im just curious what one of these winning essays are like. if not, i completely understand.

I'd suggest avoiding any other essays. Write from your heart (and revise, and spell-check, and revise again). Reading someone else's essay might end up influencing how you structure and form your own, which would be a real shame.

I already applied to colleges, and received my decisions ^^

I really only was asking for my own viewing enjoyment

Check your PM :)
