If I go and get a degree in Chemical engineering and then decide I would like to specialize in PetE, how would getting my Masters work? I know the fields are somewhat similar but would I have to take extra classes than if I had decided to get a Masters in ChemE again? I know this is a popular thing to do, get a ChemE bachelors and then PetE masters so Id just like to know how the transition is. In general, how does it work getting a Masters in a different degree then your undergraduate?
I don’t see the transition being very difficult. I can see it being difficult for someone coming from an EE background but chemical engineering you should have no problem. After all, petroleum engineering is essentially a branch of chemical engineering. I would imagine you would just apply and make sure you meet the requirements. It wouldn’t hurt to take additional technical electives that focus on petroleum engineering which I am sure your school offers. My classmate graduated chemical engineering and he’s doing nuclear engineering for grad school right now, I’ll have to ask him but from what I remembered he just applied and had a genuine interest in petroleum engineering. He took the same classes I did and I wasn’t even specializing in anything but chemical engineering.
we had an EE that got into a masters in PetE. he joined our 3rd year reservoir engineering class. he said it was over his head. chemE might be a bit different, but its doable. if the school accepts you they must think that you can handle it. I would pick and area then take the2 or 3 undergrad courses specific to that area before doing your masters in that area.
